Relentless heat and drought take a toll on herders’ physical and mental health, in Kenya and the US
Whether in Kenya or California, herders face dangerous temperatures and difficult conditions that put a strain on their health.

We need to know more about how heat exposure may translate into chronic health effects for herders - in Kenya and the US, where herders are less studied. Continuous funding is key - hard to come by, but necessary to understand how work environments affect health as extreme heat keeps coming. 4/

As we report in The Conversation, we're seeing a relationship between heat exposure and symptoms of heat-related illness and mental health impacts. More than a year after a huge drought in 2020-23, herders still remembered those health impacts and how difficult it was to do normal things outside. 3/
In October 2024, researchers asked 90 Kenyan herders to recall how the 2020-23 drought affected their health. All agreed with having feelings of stress and hopelessness as the drought took a toll on their health and livestock.

In Kenya, where there are solid social networks and cellphone networks to reach herders, we're studying the real-time and long-term impacts of heat on herders' health. Our team members ride on motorcycles and deploy wearable tech to make sure people's experiences are captured. 2/

Out today in @us.theconversation.com: There are shepherds on the US open range exposed to extreme heat. It's difficult for medical professionals to serve them, much less for public health researchers to study them. As extreme heat gets more common, how could it be affecting herders' health? 🧵 1/

If we can identify how households tend to diversify their portfolios given different kinds of climate patterning, we can better identify who needs what now. This isn’t our last paper on the subject – stay tuned for more social + climate data → what is patterning doing! 8/

Anne Pisor @annepisor.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
What is clear to us as researchers, however, is that we need to more systematically understand whether patterning in climate events – not just one-time bad events, or more climate extremes overall – influences household responses. 7/

Anne Pisor @annepisor.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
The estimated effects for other kinds of drought patterning are mixed. While more spatially extensive droughts predict remittances in Nigeria, for example – consistent with our predictions about long-distance sharing – extensive droughts predict less use of remittances in the other countries. 6/
Faceted plot of the predicted relationship between country (colored lines), the four characteristics of drought (severity, frequency, temporal autocorrelation, and spatial extent), and the probability of receiving a remittance. These plots capture the variability in predicted effects by country – including the positive and negative relationships between spatial extent and predicted probability of receiving a remittance by country

In our paper in Climatic Change (linked here), we find that when the average severity of droughts is higher – meaning especially low levels of rain and soil evapotranspiration – households are more likely to receive at least one remittance. But there's more... 5/ link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Our team wanted to know whether patterning in climate events is associated with households receiving remittances, suggesting that households are using the traditional strategy of sharing resources across space. We looked at publicly available climate and household data from six African countries. 4/
