I know a lot of people outside of LA like to bash "Hollywood elites" but they're a tiny % of who actually lives and works here to make the things you love watching. We have hemoraged jobs due to the same oligarchs messing everything else up. This matters.

LOL! This bunch of thumbs is having Y2K fantasies of vibe coding their way out of an infrastructure event. Y2K was a "non-event" because a bunch of COBOL programmers with overflowing ashtrays were pulled out of mothballs and worked for several years making sure it was a non-event. Arrogant twits.

20 Years Later, the Y2K bug seems like a joke. That's because those behind the scenes then took it seriously
Some of the fixes put in place in 1999 are still used today to keep the world’s computer systems running smoothly

Though I did tear up just a little at the "bang, bang" part because that'll always remind me of Yulia Lipnitskaya, who...well, see above. Sigh.

Watching Sofia Samodelkina skate always makes me think of the CORRECT context of "I want to see women in women's sports!" YES. Women. Not broken and abused teenage girls. She looks grown and strong and thriving and so utterly joyful. This is what sports, or performance, should be.

There's a poll for this: (www.cato.org/blog/75-amer...)
70% of Americans say the US would be better off with more people working in factories, but only 33% want to personally work in a factory.

Excellent thread! There *are* rewards for being A Good Guy Who Speaks Up even if they are not immediately obvious or publicly bestowed. First, integrity is its own reward. Maybe you didn’t save the world or change hearts & minds. But if you held the line on not making it worse, that’s something.

Thread and also: yep, it's literally the regurgitated corpse of homophobic bathroom/sports/safety rhetoric. Which is itself the zombified racist rhetoric of the same exact crap.

Motivation matters: Hard to make govt work if you don't believe in govt. Members of the civic tech movement saw themselves as pursuing prosocial goals of making govt work better, while DOGE was engaged in reactionary politics to make govt smaller and serve the owner class of Silicon Valley.
Civic tech has always focused on making government work for people: understanding community needs, delivering outcomes over outputs, prioritizing effectiveness over efficiency. DOGE and the U.S. Digital Service start from the same premise — government is failing to deliver — but diverge completely in their response. DOGE’s focus is efficiency, cost-cutting, and software modernization…It may seem pedantic, but it’s foundational. Focusing on technology centers the systems and institutions. Focusing on service centers the outcome and the people.

Crazy to me that "cope" or "coping" have become insults online. God forbid a person is able to cope. Some of you should learn how to cope tbh.

One of my favorite cases of someone being Wrong on the Internet was a very earnest, very confused vegan who was telling people how cruel honey is; and it eventually turned out they thought honey was made by putting bees in a centrifuge and spinning them around until they threw up.

I would expand this to essentially every case where someone thinks DEI is the thing that lost them a job, because no, that's now how that works. The person who beat you is at least as qualified as you are, they're just *more interesting than you*.

"Your brains stop developing at age 25" was a press misrepresentation of a study. They wanted to see if brains continued to develop after adolescence, so the study was capped at age 25. A later study with a wider subject pool showed that brains are ALWAYS developing our whole lives.

Lol. Someone did a comment of outrage, methinks. I too hate what happened to autocorrect and grammar checkers since they removed all legit style guides and dictionaries. It was never perfect, but back in the 2000s, it was at least a little helpful for a first pass on copy editing. Now, nope.

This is my solution to the "there was unity" vs. "no there wasn't" divide I am currently seeing. We talk a lot about in-group vs. out-group dynamics these days. And we can apply those to this time period too.

The United States "where I've been" map. New York and Virginia are colored in as "lived there". PA, VT, MA, ME, CT, are colored in as "stayed a while". CA, WA, WI, IL, OH, and the rest of the East Coast except GA are colored in as "visited". WV, MI, and IN are colored in as "passed through". Everything else is colored in as "never been".

For writing purposes, I can hand wave and put the event in a plausible-enough location (now I just have to check a few other related facts to make sure that my preferred location IS plausible). But the confidently incorrect AI "fact" plus something I didn't ask for that tipped me off is disturbing!

Anneke @anneke23.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Okay this is petty but SO IRRITATING: I was trying to Google a somewhat obscure fact (location of a lesser known sporting event) for a fic I'm writing. Actual Google doesn't know! Google AI gave me an answer and then told me someone I know was NOT there won at an age that is mathematically wrong.
