ATTENTION BLUESKY! Annie says they are really hoping to boost the number of artists (crew, performers, creative teams, anyone) outside New York who are filling this out to get a broader sampling. If you are in the arts please take a second and fill this out!

My 3.5yo has recently developed a habit of saying, "Mama, I have a question" and then following it with a declarative statement. I don't miss moderating multiple talkbacks a week, but clearly the universe thinks I do.

The Cats movie is kinda the (much lower stakes) entertainment industry equivalent of going to war with Iran: there were really good reasons no one tried it for decades, it wasn't a failure of nerve.

deeply annoying that creative breakthroughs don’t come on schedule from direct work but from things like “open-ended conversations with interesting people” and “doing nothing”

I think multiple things can be true: it is immensely more difficult to be a woman and a person of color in leadership, and sternness from a woman is commonly read as cruelty. But also, no one should be staying up until 4 AM and crying to make theater

What’s in a nation? And who defines its dominant narrative? While the U.S. is celebrating its 250th birthday, we thought it would be an edifying corrective to turn to the land’s original storytellers. Here, DeLanna Studi reads an excerpt from her powerful opening poem "So Let the Fireworks Come."

Just looked at the Wikipedia page for "Dramaturg" for the first time in ages, and, while I'm glad that it no longer suggests that dramaturgs are primarily dispensers of office supplies, I feel like the assertion that there is a decline in #newplays being written doesn't get it quite write either.

Are dramaturgs ascending to Assoc AD positions because they want to, because the long-serving ADs feel threatened by younger directors, or because Lit Offices have been decimated as commissioning and festival programs have dried up? It’s probably a mix of all three…

I ask all of our current theater leaders to consider: instead of or in addition to that building project, create real paths into the profession for people getting started and coming up. Double dog dare you to find ways in your season to give starting artists real responsibility and authority.

Democratizing the arts looks like universal income, low-barrier grants for both emerging and working artists, well-funded municipal arts & recreation programs, vibrant third spaces, and a well-funded public school system with progressive curriculum. Not a free pass for corporate-owned slop engines.

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.
