I stand, as always, with the people of Iran, against the brutal murdering dictators. It is hard to be hopeful, in the midst of all the violence. Reportedly at least 2,000 protestors dead. But since they won’t give up hope, how can I?

Happy New Year all. I have no idea what this year will bring, but a new year is a good excuse for hope. I hope the best for you, my friends, my colleagues, and the world at large. As for myself, I have a show to put on and amazing artists to work with. What better reason for hope is that?

One small light to add to a very dark few days. Some may remember that one of our shows in Rehearsal for Truth was about a Belarusian political prisoner named Maria Kasalnekava. Well the actor who did the show, Maryna Yakubovich, wrote to tell me that Maria has been freed! Some truly good news.

Helen Shaw is a talented critic and I am glad for her that she is getting a good job at The New York Times. I am worried that she will be relegated (as Jesse Green was) to Broadway while I think her biggest strengths lie in championing the small and more experimental work. Fingers crossed.

Be loud. I don’t want to exaggerate the importance of theater, but I truly think that it is at these times where our voices as artists are most important. Here’s the small blessing in the lack of government support for the arts. Now is the time we can, we must provide a voice unafraid of censorship.

A third Jewish show (at a different venue) at the @edfringe.bsky.social has been cancelled. This is pure antisemitism, and it is horrifying. The fest has been welcoming to us so far, but at this point I do think more needs to be done to make sure that Jewish work is more than safe, it is celebrated.

Whatever your feelings about Jesse Green's reviews, I'm not sure the Times pivoting to video and internet personalities for their critics is a good thing. Considering the restaurant critics are now filing a video AND a review for a single restaurant, this just lessens the number of overall reviews

Margaret Lyons is one of the best in the TV critic game & I'm v dismayed. Also these rash changes IMO will end in more NYT nonsense. Mgmt wants people with big/growing followings on social/platforms--but also they'll never want any controversy. Those conflicting goals = set people up for failure 👎

The NEA bloodbath will impact us all, whether we get funds or not, whether we are artists or audience members or simply citizens. I used to look at the low level of federal funding as an American curse. But it also means that, for better or worse, we know how to find a way. We will not be silenced.
