Actually you know what? We should all plan to take November 18th off and take ourselves out of capitalism time to read the book.

Really I think “ontological difference” is a phrase I was waiting for because that’s it exactly. Thanks, Mr. Pope. Even if your people were posting on X.

We’ve been doing a bunch of mapmaking, too — and students have been referring to their maps while making their games, which is cool.

It’s been really fun to talk to students about how they’re adapting texts into games — and the range of approaches has been terrific. Also, I’ve been getting a lot of: “Can I keep working on this at home? I want to ___”

And I got Accessory Lab for my club, and students want to make jewelry, knit, crochet, and embroider, so I’m gathering materials and planning some mini workshops for students who want to learn new types of crafting (from each other and from me).

We’re making board/card games in two of my classes (6th grade English for Wanderings of Odysseus and in my 7th grade elective, World Building and A Wizard of Earthsea). We’re doing some modernizations and monologues (creative writing projects) in 8/9 Humanities & in 7th grade English.

Since returning to teaching and the start of the school year, I feel like I’ve disappeared from most things. I didn’t expect to resurface until around now. Things are so busy: four preps + a club. Good stuff, though.

Went to middle school curriculum night, and it was shockingly different from the first open house we attended when we moved here. I ran into so many parents that I know from various committees, from volunteering, from soccer — it’s really nice to find people from so many circles in one spot.

A truly heinous man has doxxed the Cornell victim on X and the comments are predictably vile. Based on countless interviews I’ve done with survivors, the trauma they are subjected to for coming forward is oftentimes even worse than the initial trauma they experienced. There is no real justice system

A "2025 survey found that 35% of undergraduate women who responded reported experiencing nonconsensual sexual contact during their time at the university, compared with 23% in the 2023 survey." Neither % surprises me. The increase is beyond appalling. www.lawcommentary.com/articles/cor...

Just helping with editing here. These bots aren’t sentient. They’re doing what they’re programmed to do. OpenAI, a private company supposedly bound by laws, committed federal crimes.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

It’s astonishing to see this, even though we saw it coming months ago. White = 10°F + above normal in the El Niño regions. Its immense! In the air, a regional warming of 10° is no big deal. But in the ocean it’s immense! Think about how hard it is/ how long it takes to cool/ heat your pool. 1/

Pause talk coming from the tech barons (which is not new, they've played this tune before) sounds to me like hedging for a shift in power after the midterms more than anything else. We should regulate them, but they should not be rehabilitated.

We finished new fac/staff orientation earlier this week and have full faculty meetings next week. Students begin right after Labor Day. I just wrapped a planning call with one of the fellows, and it's *so* fun working with them -- such good energy.

I just realized that I haven't done a professional news update here yet -- which is that I'm now Grade 6-9 English faculty at a tiny & progressive independent school (which has some junior boarding, too). I'm heading their English program and mentoring teaching fellows.

Yes, exactly -- the time can be used for discussion and critique, of course, but it's like a lab or studio in the sense that you're making things in a communal environment.

@drbibliomane.bsky.social I'm starting at an independent school, and we're being encouraged to assign reading + text annotations for homework and to do writing / projects during class time. Class becomes like a workshop or art atelier -- a space for making.

On my way to the grocery store today, I drove past a flock of about 20 turkeys that were in someone's front yard. About half a mile later, I saw a flock of about 30 geese -- 5 of which were in the middle of the road (of course). Note: Geese don't care if you honk at them. They will take their time.

Oof. Listening to someone who was a software engineer for 31 years. Got laid off in February. Now he has 5 part-time gigs and makes half what he used to (Amazon warehouse, local PD, small web support gigs). And works 60hrs/wk. So rough.

For the record, the proportion of professors at Cambridge who are Black is 0.4%. The number of Black people in the UK population is 4%. So the number of Black professors at Cambridge is ONE TENTH of what you would expect in a meritocracy.

there is no such thing as "age verification." All "age verification" is actually "identity verification." You can coat it in glitter and "privacy-preserving" wrapping paper. But in the end, mandating age verification means mandating surveillance be built into software and hardware. Period.

One of the other reasons: many third spaces in the US have closed. My undergrads in Europe went out more often than my US students did — it was easier to get around without a car, and they had more options re: where to go.

It was refreshing and also seriously depressing that such basic, straightforward coverage feels refreshing. Like wow: not everything is subjective or governed by how some guy who knows absolutely nothing about a topic feels.
