I found a single (!) ceramic doll arm in the dirt I was excavating to fill this planter, and as someone who has read @tkingfisher.com’s A House With Good Bones, I knew what I had to do.

A young bay laurel is sitting inside a wine barrel planter, freshly filled with dirt, and a bone-white doll arm reaches out of the soil near the base of the plant, as if to grab you.

It’s fig season and I just ran down the mail carrier with a takeout tray full of fruit, in case you want to know how the “smaller” first harvest crop is going.

Proposing an art trade with my niece was a brilliant move to get me more practice (and more Niece Art). This is our second round of 👍 so I hope I can convince her to try another pose next time. Now to possibly RUIN EVERYTHING by adding an ink wash. It’s getting mailed either way!

That feeling of frustration when you can’t make your pretty ribbon form a pretty bow, so you just tie a tie. But then you discover that the bottle actually looks amazing wearing a tie.

If I drink more than two (2) lattes I can see time and taste sound, so I loved the Workshop Cafe in San Francisco (RIP) which charged a $2/hour fee for its tables. I could stay long after my caffeine quota was met. I’d love to see this replicated elsewhere.

I just got tear gassed along with thousands of union members, many of whom had their families with them. Federal agents at the ICE facility tear gassed children. We must abolish ICE, DHS, and we must have prosecutions. I expect to see enforcement of our city code prohibiting the use of tear gas.

It was “baby’s first tear gas” for so many of us, including some literal babies. This crowd looked exactly like the No Kings march, so as you can expect, we saw the gas approaching and thought it was just smoke from the flash bangs until it started burning.

It is with a heavy heart that I bring you the news of Lemon Pig’s untimely passing. Let us bow our heads in loving memory, and know that while Lemon Pig was with us for only a few days, they shall even so be treasured in our memories for at least a couple weeks.

An ink wash before/after portrait of a “lemon pig”, i.e. a lemon with clove eyes and toothpick legs that had little “ears” cut out of its skin. In the “before” portrait it appears cheerful (for a lemon) and is holding a quarter in its mouth. In the “after” portrait its ears are crumpled, the quarter has dropped to the ground, and its mouth is open in a gape of pure despair as the skin around the cut begins to turn brown and desiccate. Dates indicate the lemon pig lived from Jan 1 to Jan 4.

The photograph of the Jan 4 lemon pig this portrait is based on. As in the painting, the quarter is on the ground and the pig appears unspeakably distraught.

I had an idle thought tonight — didn’t I write some silly notes about pumpkins last year? — and holy shit, look what I found. I have no memory of cleaning them up like this.
