Jeffrey Archer who has died aged 86 was not a lovable rogue but a serial liar who ended up being sentenced to 4 years in prison for perjury. Even The Times lengthy obituary gives full details. Befo…

Difficult to see clearly in the photo, but I think that's three fatal highway accidents and a round dozen liability lawsuits.

Maybe half the point is to try to put an end to the notion of corporate liability. “Our AI did it, no one’s to blame. Moving right along …” “Maybe you should have arranged things so your AI couldn’t do it.” “What? But it’s AI! Our great hope for the future! Why do you hate progress?”

My Amazon "About You" is boringly mundane and contains no speculation about the shape of my ass. They suspect I have a cat, which could explain all the cat litter I keep buying, and that I "cook with specialized techniques", which sounds faintly perverse but is, alas, untrue.

2026 Me: Listen, I'm you from the future. The war on AI is coming. Past Me: Cool. Do we have to fight off swarms of killer robots with machine guns? 2026 Me: Actually, no. Most of your time and energy will be spent tarpitting aggressive webcrawlers and trying to reclaim your disk space.

Long ago Tim Berners-Lee wrote a piece about how URIs should be stable. Some of it's dated (who here remembers `cgi-bin`?) but the principles are sound. And soundly ignored, for the most part. Some linkrot is due to sites going offline, but much could be avoided. www.w3.org/Provider/Sty...

Any sentence that begins "No one is fool enough to …" is off to a bad start. Whatever you follow that with, you're almost certainly wrong. Granted, Herodotus didn't have the benefit of our additional twenty-five centuries of experience, but he should still have known better.

It’s not altruism. It’s “effective altruism”, which is a different animal entirely. “Effective altruism” is the gateway drug to the whole TESCREAL package (it’s the ‘EA’ in TESCREAL), which is a philosophy much loved by the new conscienceless rich. No surprise “The Economist” approves.

A question I often ask is "Is this technology that I use working for me, or is it working for someone else?" Social media pretends to work for you, but actually works for someone else. Even some software you paid for keeps trying to sell you things: you wanted a tool, but it's really a storefront.

I wish he hadn’t made his protagonist a literal rapist. Yes, Foyle is an anti-hero, yes, he changes and, I think, comes to regret his actions. But that aspect of the book is really hard to get past. Can you find a character sympathetic who has done something inexcusable?
