This month's bonus video episode is with longtime friend of the podcast, @lauraewallace.bsky.social. She's back to reminisce about my awkward interviewing in the early days of Opinion Science, share her recent research on mindset certainty, and try out a new segment.

This month's bonus episode features science communicator @alexdainis.bsky.social sharing her thoughts on responsibly communicating uncertainty when reporting on science. It's an important extension of this month's episode on the persuasive potential of (the right kind of) uncertainty.

Panera manages to make the most timid of product recommendations. When a brand says "You might also like..." they're expressing uncertainty using language called "hedging." Have you seen a brand make the most lukewarm, uncertain pitch for its own product? Leave a comment to tell us about it.

One of most heartbreaking things about Hank Green turning to LLMs is that he gets to do science communication full-time to a massive audience and is well-resourced. He doesn't need to cut corners or outsource his thinking. Meanwhile, there are so many people doing amazing work with zero resources.

From episode 119 of Opinion Science, featuring Dr. Demi Oba. His research highlights how people express various kinds of uncertainty, and some of it can be persuasive--even more persuasive than expressing certainty.

When people see their political party talk about why their positions are morally correct, it inspires people to take action and express their support for that party because they feel especially proud. From ep 118 of Opinion Science with Dr. Jae-Hee Jung.

Spotted in one of my favorite bathrooms (in a print shop). A little pep talk for my fellow inky friends.
Print featuring Dickens quote: The Printer. Without him, tyrants and humbugs in all countries would have their own way. He is a friend of intelligence and thought, a friend of liberty, of freedom, of law, indeed, the friend of every man who is a friend of order. Of all inventions, of all discoveries in science and art, of all the great results in the wonderful progress of mechanical energy and skill, the printers is the only product of civilization necessary to the existence of free men.

More striking than the moral judgments themselves are the number of people who don't see these issues as morally relevant We see this often in our research: even for so-called "moral issues," people vary widely in whether they see moral bases for their positions www.pewresearch.org/religion/202...

What I like best about the Artemis II photos is that it was taken by actual humans. An actual person had to frame it and manually adjust settings. It's their own artistic rendition of what they thought looked best at the time, something no probe, rover or unmanned spacecraft can take. it's art

"Earthset" behind the lunar surfaceEarthrise, 2026“There’s the Earth comin’ up,” Anders said at the time. “Wow, is that pretty!”

Anders later compared the sight of the Earth to “a fragile Christmas tree ornament.”

“I thought to myself, it's too bad we don't treat it more like a Christmas tree ornament,” Anders said in a 2023 NASA interview. “It's really too bad, we're shooting missiles and rockets and whatnot at each other on this tiny little place we call home,” Anders added. “It's the only home in the universe for us humans. And it's too bad we don't treat it a little better.”
