This month's bonus video episode is with longtime friend of the podcast, @lauraewallace.bsky.social. She's back to reminisce about my awkward interviewing in the early days of Opinion Science, share her recent research on mindset certainty, and try out a new segment.

Whoever did the closed captions did him an unnecessary service by editing it to "mutilation."

Thrilled to share my new feature about a plucky group of scientists investigating the effects of rising temperatures on animal nervous systems. Come for The Blob, stay for the "unflappable" bird brains!

If any Blueskyers are also Instagrammers, you can follow my podcast, Opinion Science there: www.instagram.com/opinionscipod/ (i.e. *please follow the show there!*) I find Bluesky to be a tricky platform and may scale back here. I recently launched the Instagram account, and it's been fun so far!

This month's bonus episode features science communicator @alexdainis.bsky.social sharing her thoughts on responsibly communicating uncertainty when reporting on science. It's an important extension of this month's episode on the persuasive potential of (the right kind of) uncertainty.

It really is a travesty. I keep trying to give it a chance, and it's just boring slop every time. I haven't been on Twitter since Scar and the hyenas took over, but Bluesky's quieter than an elephant graveyard.

But do these qualifiers make a message more or less influential? Well, in this month's episode of Opinion Science, Dr. Demi Oba reveals that it depends on what kind of hedge it is. Would you trust a brand more if it sounded certain - or careful?

Panera manages to make the most timid of product recommendations. When a brand says "You might also like..." they're expressing uncertainty using language called "hedging." Have you seen a brand make the most lukewarm, uncertain pitch for its own product? Leave a comment to tell us about it.

One of most heartbreaking things about Hank Green turning to LLMs is that he gets to do science communication full-time to a massive audience and is well-resourced. He doesn't need to cut corners or outsource his thinking. Meanwhile, there are so many people doing amazing work with zero resources.

Also, have you IDed this one? I've been trying to track it down. Closest I found is a copycat in an Indian specimen, but no luck yet on connecting it to an American foundry/name.

Beautiful! Have you come across this Cincinnati mark before? It's only on the corner pieces of this border. I haven't seen it ina Cincinnati specimen but I assume that must rhe foundry it came from!

From episode 119 of Opinion Science, featuring Dr. Demi Oba. His research highlights how people express various kinds of uncertainty, and some of it can be persuasive--even more persuasive than expressing certainty.

When people see their political party talk about why their positions are morally correct, it inspires people to take action and express their support for that party because they feel especially proud. From ep 118 of Opinion Science with Dr. Jae-Hee Jung.

- Persuasion can be more than just flipping opinions on a single issue but about engendering more lasting openness to a party or institution.

Key Takeaways: - Pride is key to understanding why appealing to moral values can mobilize supporters to take action. - Contrary to the popular belief that moralizing must spark partisan backlash, inclusive moral messaging can actually move the needle among people who aren't already on your side.

Is moral language in politics a recipe for polarization, or is it actually a bridge to finding common ground? Today's episode of Opinion Science features my conversation with @jaeheejung.bsky.social on the strategic language of persuasive messages in political campaigns and beyond.

Can we quit it with the 200-page supplementary materials? Or at least let's just all explicitly agree that these bloated supplements have NOT been peer-reviewed. Sincerely, Guy who still prints out papers to read and didn't realize the reviewer PDF was 200+ pages
