I wonder if there could have been hybrid sterility for XX due to disordered meiosis as well or instead? Pretty common in hybrids. In Evolution, a lot of stuff gets thrown at the wall and the diversity we detect is what happens to stick. 🧪

Seeing some "A.I. brain" mistakes on wikipedia that are pretty worrying for science 🧪 education.. e.g. on the page for "Mammalogy" you can see the impact of the kind of hand-wavy way neural nets handle meaning. Mammalogy ≠ Mammography ≠ Mastology but you can imagine how ChatGPT would get there.

Thanks to @thewildlifesociety.bsky.social for sharing! Non-invasive molecular disease surveillance won't ever be as high-resolution as lethal sampling of tissues for histopathology, but when you want your study species to stay alive.. what're you gonna do? 🧪 wildlife.org/the-microbio...

🧪 New bat disease study! No, not that one! I've been using next-gen sequencing to discover and describe scary bat pathogens for over a decade but this study was a fun opportunity to develop molecular surveillance tools for the sake of bat conservation with the inimitable Dr. Joy O'Keefe!

And many of them are now permanently integrated in our genomes! Endogenous viral elements are BASICALLY like a billion year old bacteria had a baby with a human.

We should have stayed "house-proud" and kept calling our arms and legs lobes. Shopping would be easier. We would just say "please show me to your lobe coverings" and then we'd have covered lobes: no problem.

Here's a photogenic lil Vampire bat caught near Guadalajara Mexico as part of a survey of ectoparasites and emerging infections.. the lil guy was released the same night, not long after after a freeze-frame voice-over said: "Ese soy yo. Probablemente te estás preguntando cómo llegué aquí."
Desmodus rotundus bat captured by mistnet on a visit to Jalisco District of Mexico. The individual is having it's forearm length measured by digital caliper and appears to be smiling with cartoonish joy, but is probably just looking to get away and smelling large mammals (muy delicioso).
