The internet was basically just this for the first 15 years. For every discipline, interest, and field of study but self-marketing.

I wonder if there could have been hybrid sterility for XX due to disordered meiosis as well or instead? Pretty common in hybrids. In Evolution, a lot of stuff gets thrown at the wall and the diversity we detect is what happens to stick. 🧪

I think we have to be a bit more suspicious of the Turing Test… it’s closer to Schroe’s Cat as a thought experiment revealing our limits. It should come as no surprise that the 1st thing people want to call AI are programs designed to learn enough Language to convince people they are intelligent

That’s the kind of attention to detail in world building you expect from Ridley Scott. What a moment.

A similar recommendation would be to say, “hey alcoholic, don’t you know non-alcoholic beer exists?” For gambling addicts the risk is what gives that high you describe, and so the risk is the reward.

I’m an expert on emerging bat-associated viruses going back about a decade prior to COVID. It’s not been fun to be right and then have your life’s work politicized for the stupidest head-in-the-sand reasons. Global health security and biodefense was an important and natural thing for the US to lead!

I’m not usually all that House Proud, but Cornell’s SUNY side (which I transferred into from a state school) is the best of it all. So many bright, poor folks I knew there did community college for 2 years and finished Ivy at SUNY rates.

I'm an emerging infections scientist with experience in reservoir ecology and clinical differential diagnoses of rare disease. The case definition change is the TLDR that needs explaining for these plots, even if we know that the range can change. Still interesting!

The main thing we knew about coronavirus immunity prior to COVID was that CoVs are VERY good at avoiding the establishment of durable immunity in a host. Virology group chats in 2020 were looking at a pretty bleak and long horizon already. It was clear we would be recommending doses every year.

Seeing some "A.I. brain" mistakes on wikipedia that are pretty worrying for science 🧪 education.. e.g. on the page for "Mammalogy" you can see the impact of the kind of hand-wavy way neural nets handle meaning. Mammalogy ≠ Mammography ≠ Mastology but you can imagine how ChatGPT would get there.

I remember learning this by watching 100kg tarpon gulp at the surface in the New Orleans aquarium during an internship.. and just the next year, being able to breathe air was the only reason they survived Hurricane Katrina when the water quality systems failed. Pretty remarkable.

🧪 New bat disease study! No, not that one! I've been using next-gen sequencing to discover and describe scary bat pathogens for over a decade but this study was a fun opportunity to develop molecular surveillance tools for the sake of bat conservation with the inimitable Dr. Joy O'Keefe!

They quantify the investment really well. And that 99.4% is definitely on the conservative side.. I think we can go ahead and all the way up when you include funding for prior methods development and basic science eliminating vast swathes of drug target search space.
