First visit to Gloucester (S) services today. I see why people rave about it. Doorstep bacon sandwich to die for. Lovely coffee. Friendly service. Some excellent fresh food in the farm shop. Clean and tidy. A pleasure to visit, unlike other motorway services.

Been in Cambridge for a few days. Have had three terrific meals. All really good value (to me anyway). If you avoid the tourist traps and get lucky on the booking systems (we had to book all three places months in advance) it’s a great city to eat and drink in.

Bought a shirt a few weeks ago that I really liked. Went back to shop, none left. Try website, nowhere to be seen. Give up. Two days later, email from company with exact shirt now in sale (even though it was not on website at all 2 days earlier!). Two ordered. Result.

Brexit did not restore sovereignty. It exposed Britain to subjugation as America’s poor relation: a market to penetrate, an asset to strip and a country too isolated to negotiate as an equal. The answer is not another flimsy reset, Britain needs to return to the European table.

Local family lost a dad/husband very suddenly recently from a brain tumour. They are having a celebration of his life this afternoon/evening in the barn up the road from us. When I go I hope people celebrate me passing in just such a glorious, loud, fun,celebratory way. 🕺🏽💃🏻🎹🎸🪇🎵🎹

All party conferences make the observer feel like David Attenborough, peering through the undergrowth at some ecosystem that exists by its own mysterious rules. See the busy termites of Labour, with their factions and their composite motions, or the great hippopotami of the Conservatives, bellowing strange noises that convey some mysterious meaning only they can comprehend. And over here we find the primates of Reform, dominated by an aged alpha male, “Nigel”.

Nigel rules his corner of the jungle with an iron fist, monopolising access to both attention and to precious resources such as champagne and oysters. The other males in the troop seem aggressive when approached, baring their teeth and waggling their bottoms at strangers, who are always presumed to be hostile. But in the presence of Nigel, they immediately become submissive, bowing their heads and repeating whatever comes out of his mouth.

Despite all of the hot weather I managed to find ½ kg of blackberries, which my wife made into 4 jars of jam. If we keep getting rain we may even get another crop as there is plenty of unripe fruit still on the bushes.
