Today is catch up on the little things day. We got the pool covered a few days back, late by about 3-4 weeks. Today I’m vacuuming out water lines and blocking jets/skimmer, among other things. It’s been a busy year and I’m still looking forward to my prediction that things will calm down soon.

And despite our advances, 141 years later we have those who choose fear over science. If nothing else, it demonstrates that as a rule, society advances faster than individual humans.

Considering it’s the bundibugyo strain which we are far less prepared for, this should be more of a concern than we’re showing it.

It was a perfect evening for this! However, weather depending, it may yet be outdone as the peak migration through Fort Whyte isn't until around the end of the first week of October to Thanksgiving range.

Well that was an interesting trip. I went to Owen Sound to prep the home there for sale now that it’s no longer needed and decided to take my “new” steal-of-a-deal old truck so that I could bring a load back with me. Transmission blew just outside Thunder Bay - $9k of total expenses later…

Some of the photos taken by my phone as the eclipse progressed. Really wish I had remembered to bring my telescope to the cottage though! The phone camera washed out as it got closer to maximum, so I'll only post these 3. Taken at 10:05PM, 10:24PM, and 10:34PM (max was at 11:13PM our time)

A bittersweet kind of day today. I went to the Celabration of Life of my best friend in high school and beyond, who was permanently disabled from a cycling accident when he was 25. Good to see some schoolmates and other friends and family, I just wish the circumstances were different.

Back from my trip to Owen Sound. It was an adventure, with some good, some bad. The good? Seeing three moose on the way out, and another on the way back. And a rather large grey wolf casually strolling across the highway a half km in front of me. No pictures except the ones in my mind.

Today is an important day for people to learn how cell phones and towers work (yes, even when on wifi). The tornado warnings cover a large area. Inside that large area are many cell towers. Your cell phone will work to find closest tower and switch Each one of those towers will send a signal.

My words of wisdom for the day.
The 5 laws everyone should know:
1. The Dunning - Kruger Effect: The less you know, the more certain you feel. The more you learn, the more you realize how much you don't. Ignorance breeds confidence. Mastery breeds humility.
2. Parkinson's Law: Work expands to fill the time you give it. That "busy" feeling? It's often poor structure, not hard work. Shorten the deadline you'll find focus.
3. The Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule): 80% of your results come from 20% of your actions.
Identify that 20% and double down. The rest is noise disguised as productivity.
4. Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity or carelessness. Most people aren't out to get you
- they're just distracted. Don't take neglect personally.
5. The Peter Principle: People rise to their level of incompetence. Great employees often make terrible managers. Success in one role doesn't guarantee skill in the next.

We can joke about it, but at some point it’s a serious debate over at what point we define “life”? It has been raised and debated in the past, often in SF through shows like STNG, in reference to Commander Data. I sometimes argue (for fun) that we still haven’t found intelligent life on Earth.

12-Foot Davis was a legendary figure in the Peace River region. His name came not from his height, but from a fortune he allegedly made on a 12-foot wide gold mining claim. As a trader, he was considered honest and fair. This is his story. 📸 Mhalifu 🧵 1/9

Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ People here in Canada. Please take a few minutes today to reflect on these people, their lives and how we can value them more. This incredible photo is by Amber Bracken.
The image captures a poignant scene with a rainbow arching across a dark, cloudy sky in the background, contrasting with the somber atmosphere. In the foreground, a red sundress hangs on a wooden cross, positioned amidst a field of wildflowers and tall grasses. The dress, seemingly simple and casual, is illuminated by the warm, golden light, drawing attention to its presence as a symbol of loss and memory. The wooden cross stands tall, its texture aged and weathered. Additional crosses are visible in the background, each bearing garments, suggesting a memorial site. The overall composition evokes feelings of sorrow, remembrance, and quiet reflection. The lighting creates a dramatic effect, with shadows and highlights emphasizing the textures of the fabrics and the roughness of the wooden structures. The spatial arrangement places the viewer close to the foreground cross while hinting at a larger, more extensive memorial in the distance. The dark clouds and rainbow create a striking contrast, symbolizing both sorrow and hope. There are at least six crosses with garments hanging on them.
