If you were up in the middle of the night last night/this morning, you might have heard me talking to Paul Ross on TalkSport Extra Time show about Rex Juba, which is also their book of the week (must be the football analogy in my prologue).

Beginning my research seminar, as always, with Lynn Hunt's essay How Writing Leads to Thinking (and Not the Other Way Around). Should be mandatory reading in light of the impact of AI. www.historians.org/perspectives...
Writing is stressful. Sitting in my computer chair my neck and shoulder muscles almost immediately tense up as I dig around in my brain for the best phrase or even any coherent string of words, whether I am writing an essay like this one, a book chapter, a letter of recommendation, or an email message to a friend. Writing is time-consuming. It’s a great way to pass the time on a long airplane flight because you lose track of the passage of time altogether. It’s even better, from that point of view exclusively, than watching an episode of Mad Men on your laptop. Writing means many different things to me but one thing it is not: writing is not the transcription of thoughts already consciously present in my mind. Writing is a magical and mysterious process that makes it possible to think differently.

This whole saga has very much reminded me that most readers (and apparently some fiction writers too!) believe that writing narrative non-fiction is stenography: you find out the facts and then you write them down in order. Whereas it is absolutely, 100% considered storytelling!

A proper pinch-me moment this week as Rex Juba was turned into an audio book, narrated by the lovely Sebastian Humphreys, whose voice you might recognise as the narrator of Madeline E Miller’s Circe amongst other things. Here he is, pronouncing yet another difficult Roman name!

Spent my last day in Algeria exploring its third city, Constantine, which is built atop rocky promontories linked by 8 bridges. Breathtaking. That’s it, that’s the end of my Algerian photos! Such an amazing trip, and at least some of it will make it into the book!

Last day of ruins today: Timgad, the Roman city of Thamugadi, up on the high plateau and so well preserved; the Medrecen, the tomb of a Numidian king, as featured on the 2000 dinar note; and the Tomb of Massinissa, in the foothills above Constantine (his old capital of Cirta).
