AI has an environmental problem. Here’s what the world can do about that.
The sprawling data centres that house AI servers churn out toxic electronic waste and are voracious consumers of electricity, which in most places is still produced from fossil fuels.

In an office clear out, I found this gem from 2018. "Why are there so few women in physics?" written just after a CERN physicist publicly claimed women were less capable than men at physics research🤦‍♀️ 👩‍🔬🧪 The article is 6yrs old, but it is still relevant today ℹ️: www.newscientist.com/article/mg24...
A magazine piece with the headline "What are there so few women in physics?" The text reads: Women are wildly under-represented in physics – which isn't surprising to any women who has worked in the field says Valerie Jamieson. But there are solutions. Samaya Nissanke, smiling in front of a green bush. The text reads Astrophysicist and theoretical physicist, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands: “Women in physics appear to experience much more subconscious bias in the academic setting, sexual harassment – especially when there are power differentials at play – as well as straightforward bullying.”Catherine Heymans talking with hand out stretched. The text reads, Astrophysicist, University of Edinburgh, UK: “Mothers, grandmothers, aunts and cousins, the most important female role models in the lives of young girls, are telling them from a very early age that science is too hard and not for them, just as they were told when they were young.”A photo of Chanda Prescod-Weinstein talking with her hand outstretched. The text reads Cosmologist and theoretical physicist, University of Washington, Seattle: “Here in the US, we live in an anti-indigenous, white supremacist and patriarchal society, and physics as a community has inherited society’s problems.”
Below Chanda is a smiling Jessie Christiansen, Astrophysicist, NASA Exoplanet Archive: “Children learn about the accomplishments of historical male physicists, male physicists win the prizes and chair the panels and appear in the media. They are seen as the authority figures of physics.”

I'm inclined to think it's possible to try too hard on this sort of thing. I reckon just reduce the pre-16 content to a sensible amount and let teachers get on with teaching it. They'll find the extra depth for children who have the capacity, and these things ☝️ will be emergent properties.
