Ten years of relentlessly hateful, comically elitist anti-democratic politics across the white people world, helpfully summarised. The wrong people are talking, the wrong people are deciding and it’s harming the careers of important people who actually matter. Smithers! Release the hounds
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.

Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

The most letter to the LRB letter to the LRB that I have ever read.
Rude Erudition
Writing about Joanne Paul’s recent biography of Thomas More (LRB, 6 November), Lucy Wooding observes that ‘More could proclaim “the beshitted tongue” of Luther “most fit to lick” the “posterior of a pissing she-mule”.’ She adds: ‘This kind of rhetoric sits uncomfortably with the accepted view of More as, if not a saint, at least a scholar of immense sophistication.’ But even here More is showing his erudition, since he is almost certainly adapting a line from the Roman poet Catullus. Here is More’s Latin: ‘ut vel meientis mulae posteriora lingat.’ And here is Catullus 97, lines 7-8: ‘praeterea rictum qualem diffissus in aestu/meientis mulae cunnus habere solet.’ Rough translation: ‘and besides, he tends to hold his mouth open like the gaping cunt of a pissing she-mule in heat.’ Even when the humanists were vulgar, it was often with ancient precedent in mind.
