Work on the assumption that your institutional website will either (a) delete you without trace the day you leave or (b) somehow keep implying you work there forever, give people a non-functional email address to contact you on, and never update your achievements past 2015.

I used to get school schedule updates for the kids of a dentist in Texas. Eventually I reached out to the school directly to tell them to get it straight, those kids were missing some important updates.

Sometimes researchers send me unpublished proofs of forthcoming papers so I can report on the findings and prepare stories in advance. When Adobe Reader "helpfully" asks if I want an AI summary I always say no. No one should be using AI to transcribe off-the-record interviews, for the same reasons.

I'm no math whiz but how do you have a 99 point shift in net approval? Doesn't that mean at one point he had a 99% approval rating? Likewise, how can you have an approval rating of -77%? Something is not mathing for me. Doesn't sound good for Trump, though.

The viruses themselves are long dead, all that's left is their (very fragmented) genetic material, which is harmless. Sort of like finding the ripped-up instruction manual to a car – you'd be able to determine the make and model, but not reconstruct something you could drive.

Researchers have pinned the emergence of sheeppox to about 5000 years ago. The peek into the pathogen’s past came from an unusual source: dozens of medieval books and legal documents written on parchment, which is made from specially treated animal skins. Learn more: scim.ag/4iaLx30
