Trying to help with a 7th grade math assignment, I google "what costs 9 euro per kilo." Google was super helpful: "A kilo costs exactly 9 euro, when the price is 9 euro per kilo."

I had a brain fart this morning and left my folding Bike Friday outside & unlocked. I realized this 4 hours later while contemplating someone else's lovely new @bromptonbicycle.bsky.social halfway across town. Another hour later, it was still where I left it. The world is not so bad sometimes.

Best conference logo I've seen in a while (and a very cool conference, too). Between peri-mortem trauma and evidence for care the past was certainly an interesting place! Thanks to @dai-weltweit.bsky.social for hosting...

Lots of traditional German cycling clubs stage big rides each year called "Radtouristikfahrts." In addition to bananas and granloa bars, volunteers at the feed stations serve things you would only find on a German ride, like brown bread with Schweineschmalz (essentially bacon drippings) and pickles.

My 12-year-old's a huge fan of @tomgauld.bsky.social and brought his whole collection (7 books) to a signing and talk at @moderngraphics.bsky.social in Berlin last night. Tom was really kind and took the time to draw cartoons in and sign all of them. Starstruck is an understatement!

I wish #Berlin could look and sound like this all the time. This is the annual "Sternfahrt," or star ride, named for the routes that converge in the center from all over the city. This is 20 seconds of what was probably 30 minutes of continuous joy. #adfc #sternfahrt #bicycle #cycling #urbanmobility

The Swiss military culture always makes me do a double take. So many guns, so few shootings. Not captured: The guy I saw Saturday riding his bike through downtown Zurich in civilian clothes with his rifle slung across his back, presumably on the way to his semi-annual range practice.

I really struggled to put it in contemporary context. The whole landscape would have looked so different, and the top panels weren't really visible to people at the time. Just an amazing document all around.

I got to ride up one of my favorite climbs in the world (Old La Honda, near Portola, CA) for the first time in 13 years over the weekend and was only 1:30 slower than the last time. Probably because I was on an old steel 'cross bike with a handlebar bag, not because I am no longer in my 30s.

I can measure my last 32 hiking and backpacking years (plus many visits to archaeological excavations) in two pairs of boots, both Vasques. And now the company is out of business and the best cobbler in Berlin told me they definitively can't be resoled. 🥲

Every spring there's that one first warm sunny day when the carpenter bees I haven't seen in almost a year and had given up on ever seeing again come out of my little bee hotel and surprise me. Fuckin' springtime, man.

Changed my chain and brake pads this morning after my first real ride outside in weeks. I go to a mechanic for the really complicated stuff but it feels good to be able to do the basics on my bikes. (And yes, I should have changed them BEFORE my ride, but sometimes you don't notice till too late.)

Sure, I guess I have "concerns about @washingtonpost.com content." Like the lack of Metro and Sports, the layoffs that affected multiple friends and former neighbors and colleagues, and the slashing of foreign coverage. Also the terrible, crazypants editorials. I will miss the paper it used to be.

For anyone keeping track, the dollar has dropped in value by 13% against the euro in the year since Trump was inaugurated. (Down almost 3% in the last few days alone.) Not a huge vote of confidence in the US economy.

This year I read Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series, all 20 books full of British naval intrigue and adventure and odd foods. (Spotted dog, anyone?) I finished yesterday. Retreating into the early 19th century helped me avoid doomscrolling my way through 2026. Strongly recommend. #aubreymaturin

I tackled MoGaSt, a one-day ride over three big peaks in the Italian Alps. (MOrtirolo, GAvia, STelvio). It was a reminder that if I train hard and persevere I can still do hard things on a bike. It was also spectacular.

The author's been at @newyorker.com for 32 years, so he can probably do whatever he wants at this point. Still, it seems weird to me to go to work high, write about it, and admit it made you unable to do your job properly a few paragraphs later. Does that make me terribly conservative?

Pretty much. This culture - based on pottery, houses, burials, etc. - appears around 7500 years ago and all of the massacres seem to happen in a 50 year period about 7000 years ago (maybe less, that could be just a margin of error in the radiocarbon dating). Wild.
