Perseverance Mars Rover Outside Jezero Crater Sol 1999 / 2004 (4th / 10th October, 2026) You don't have to be a big rock to catch the rover's eye. SHERLOC-WATSON cam studies a small protruding inclusion in the local rock S/D: 91/970 CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS/Martian-Observer
An overview looking down on a section of the rock surface has an unsorted sharp-aggregate-in-rough-cement texture. In the centre is a protruding inclusion, no more than a chip of stone, that stands out for its white grey dappled appearance.A close up of the same subject under LED lights from sol 2004 giving better detail of it white grey blotched surface which appears polished smooth.

Crescent Io in approx. natural color. A red dot in the north locates a volcano eruption site with the red-hot magma glowing, with a blueish plume from the eruption's small particles thrown up hundreds of km up catching sunlight above it.

2/2 Here's Phobos, with Saturn (natural size 1x) in the background by @science.esa.int Mars Express Full size: flic.kr/p/2sFs2yu 🧪🔭 Credit: ESA/DLR/FUBerlin/AndreaLuck CC BY
The potato shaped moon of Mars, Phobos, as seen by ESA’s Mars Express. Its grey, covered on craters, 2 enormous ones that occupy nearly a third of the visible side, along with long grooves etched into the terrain. In the background, a tiny far away Saturn appears in a yellowish, colourised view, adding contrast without exaggerating the planet’s size.

NEW: On Oct 20, Japan will launch its most audacious space mission. It’s hoping to fly to Mars, land twice (!) on Phobos (“fear”), steal pieces of that alien moon, and bring ‘em home. That’s right: to pull of this heist, Japan must confront fear itself. @science.org www.science.org/content/arti...
