Currently Misadventuring in Entomology. Fascinated by soil dwelling invertebrates and the hymenoptera, mostly wasps. However, easily distracted by just about anything mycological, botanical or inverty.

If fellow Greens can't see how utterly toxic yesterday's “Zionism is Racism” motion was, here's another signal: Vivien is a deeply compassionate, longstanding activist who wouldn't ever speak out like this lightly. The Party has a problem with sectarianism and needs to push back against it.

I’ve been putting them in because I’m doing a family-wide review of local species so there are some of wildly different size next to each other. But it is a huge pain, especially since I’ve had to redo several to incorporate additions 🥲

One thing came up when we were revising our article. Scale bars in the pictures of new species: do we need them? Has anyone actually ever used one? To me, feels like the kind of thing that *ought* to be there. But I must admit, I've only ever put them into photos, not used them for anything.

Work in progress: Cheiridium museorum. I'm working on some pseudoscorpion drawings based on observations of live animals in the field, photographs & reference specimens. The petri dish contains specimens that were found dead in cobwebs in a church & gives an idea of how small these arachnids are.
An A4 size drawing pad with pencil drawings of six pseudoscorpions on the page, four of which have been gone over in black ink. A grey pigment liner pen is at the top of the page and to the left is a Rotring pencil and a pen eraser. A credit card size measure (marked off in millimetres) lays on the bottom left corner of the pad with a round clear plastic petri dish on top of it. The petri dish contains seven tiny brownish specks.Close up of the sketch pad showing two of the drawings, one in pen, the other in pencil. Also in the photo is the petri dish laying on top of the measure.Close up of the brownish specks in the petri dish that measure barely over 1 mm. They are dead pseudoscorpions with teardrop shaped bodies and little 'arms' that end in claws. These were all found dead in cobwebs on a window ledge in a church.

Princeton finally handed off some advance copies for the 2nd Edition of my wasp book, and they look phenomenal! Thank you everyone for your exceptional patience! Go order it right now!! press.princeton.edu/books/paperb...
A photo of me (a white woman with long brownish hair wearing glasses and a dark blue shirt) holding an advance copy of my book "The Social Wasps of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean: Second Edition" in front of an old wooden railing and some lush sassafras leaves. There is a big illustration of a bald-faced hornet on the cover.

This photo is slightly misleading, since it was taken by my mom a year ago in 2025, immediately before we noticed the major printing errors in the plate series that required us to completely redo the printing from scratch. My joy is nonetheless real, and I feel justified in using this photo since I never posted it the first time around. It's all good now!

A new book on British Earthstars by Jonathan Revett is now available to preorder from @summerfieldbooks.com #MycoBookClub #fungi #FungiFriday #Mycology www.summerfieldbooks.com/product/brit...
British Earthstars by Jonathan Revett14. Geastrum rufescens Pers.

Rosy Earthstar

<<< rufescens = red, reddening >>>

Icons: Pegler et al. (1995) p103; Jeppson (2013) p168; Læssøe et al. (2019) p1249.

A medium to large sized species with thick fleshed pinkish-red non-hygroscopic rays, a fimbriate peristome and stalked spore sac

Unexpanded fruitbody: Subglobose, 30mm 40mm.

Expanded fruitbody: 50mm - 90mm with 5-8 non-hygroscopic rays, flattened or arching with age.

Mycelial layer: Persistent, encrusting debris.

Fibrous layer: Pale grey brown

Fleshy layer: Warm reddish pink, flesh up to 8mm thick when fresh, quickly cracking and falling apart, darker with age but normally with residual reddish tones.

Spore sac: Subglobose 10mm 30mm diameter, greyish buff or light brown, smooth or minutely hairy (hand lens needed!) and with a fimbriate peristome which is often ill-defined and a short stem.

Mature Spore Mass: Dark brown.

Spores: Globose, 3.8µm 4.3µm, covered in elongated warts up to 0.5µm high.

Capillitial hyphae: 4.0µm 8.0µm, thick walled, tapering, encrusted.

Habitat: Rich litter in both deciduous and coniferous woodland, parks, arboretums.

Distribution: An uncommon species but well represented across Britain.

Discussion:

Unmistakable when fresh, thick fleshed with some degree (often very intense) of pinkish red tones and a weakly defined fimbriate peristome. The spore sac often degrades very quickly, especially around the peristome and can end up with several tears and holes. The short stem is best seen in mature specimens when all the flesh has eroded.

Unlikely to be confused with other earthstars when fresh but old specimens can resemble Geastrum michelianum or even Geastrum fimbriatum however the rays normally have dark reddish tones and sometimes dried patches of the thick flesh. The spores are also larger than G fimbriatum & G michelianum.

Often found in and around rotting tree stumps or on big thick piles of needle litter.

European Distribution & Species:

Common and widespread a…

For decades, a large millipede displayed in zoos has been known simply as a “giant African millipede.” But what species is it actually? Our new study provides an answer: Spiropoeus fischeri Brandt, 1833, a 14-cm-long millipede from West Africa.
Two figures from a scientific article. One shows a large black millipede, and the second shows the millipedes posterior end.

A mite last seen 39 years ago. We will be walking the Welsh shore looking for it, and posting as we go. The site now has a live blog, a map of everywhere we have searched, and a Welsh option. I can't speak Welsh, but this is Wales. It needed a Welsh option. Thinozercon is out there. #inverts 🧪
Screenshot of the Lost Mite of the Irish Sea website on a phone, styled like a page from an old book: cream paper, a brown double ruled border, antique serif type. A bar across the top holds a Contents button, a CY button for Welsh, and an Aa button for text size. The title reads The Lost Mite of the Irish Sea, above the line Ireland, 1915 · Wales, 1987 · Then the record goes silent. The italic paragraph below reads: The hunt for one of the strangest and most mysterious arachnids of the Irish Sea shore. First found on Irish shores in 1915, then recorded once more in Wales in 1987 by Swansea researchers working in Milford Haven on a study part funded by the oil industry. Thinozercon has not been seen since. The Hunt for Thinozercon intends to change that.
