What an amazing launch it's been! In a relatively short period of time the Ommatidium Project has helped people in #acarology and #entomology, and now we even have a crustacean expert! Thank you to everyone who has made this project successful. #bugsky
An Ommatidium Project graphic over a faded photograph of a museum drawer filled with rows of pinned moths. The heading reads "Our impact so far. Eleven days in. This is what came in." A large numeral seven is labelled "the network so far: countries with specialists volunteering their time." Below, two rows of dots show proportions: five of ten dots filled for "half want a contact or a mentor in their area of interest," and four of ten filled for "two in five aren't sure which group they're interested in yet." A bar chart headed "the rest wrote to us about" shows beetles and flies with the longest bars, and butterflies and moths and spiders at roughly half that length. At the bottom: "Most people just want someone to talk to. Ask about any insect, mite, spider or other invertebrate. No account needed." Footer reads entofacet.org, volunteer run, always free.

#entomology and #acarology (and other) communities can now join as an organisation! Thanks to the person who provided the suggestion. A bit tricky to implement but this will really help with some requests!
An Ommatidium Project announcement, set over a faded photograph of handwritten specimen labels pinned in an old drawer. The heading reads "New: now clubs and societies can join too." Below it is a mock listing card for a fictional group, The Cwmtwrch Society for the Study of Curious Insects, marked "contactable through EntoFacet." Tags read: organisation and local society, based in Wales, any group, fieldwork, outreach, beginner sessions, local knowledge, local to the upper Swansea valley, and a placeholder enquiries email address. A "can help with" line says the society welcomes beginners looking for a local group, a first field meeting, or help naming something found in the garden. A description notes it is volunteer run, founded 1873, meets monthly, and that its shared inbox reaches the committee. A "not a fit for" line says not to route microscopy, dissection, or anything requiring a Latin name in a hurry. At the bottom: "Requests arrive at your own shared inbox. Clubs, societies, museums and recording schemes. Same sign-up, just tick the box for an organisation." Footer reads entofacet.org, volunteer run, always free.

A journalist has asked me to find them an entomologist for a story they’re doing on mosquitoes. Any entomologists down?

It's a funny request for an entomologist we made up. But these sorts of requests do come in from time to time. Ask the front desk of many #entomology departments.
A close-up photograph of a brown shield bug on a pale background, above a mock request card from the Ommatidium Project. The card is labelled "example request" and reads: "We are a film studio working on a creature feature. The antagonist is a giant shield bug. Could it realistically flatten a car, and would it survive being hit with a sword?" It is marked ENT-001, new, example only, from "A. Director, not a real person, unassigned," with tags for Hemiptera, behaviour, functional morphology, and "very urgent, apparently." Below, text reads: "Somewhere out there is the person who actually knows. Ask us about any insect, mite, spider or other invertebrate. Free, no account, volunteer run."

Our internal database allows manual searches based on the tags experts provide. You'll only show up in a volunteer's search results if your tags match what the request is looking for. That level of human touch is how we connect you to people. #entomology #inverts
A mock EntoFacet expert listing shown as an example. The card names C. V. Riley, a historical entomologist, marked "contactable through EntoFacet." Tags show: based in United States, Lepidoptera, Phylloxera, applied and economic entomology, biological control, outreach, agricultural pests, classical biocontrol, history of the field, and zero open requests. A "can help with" line says questions on agricultural pests, classical biological control, and Phylloxera on Champagne grapes can be routed here. A "not a fit for" line jokes that he is not the contact for modern molecular work, or for anything requiring a living correspondent. Below the card, a panel with a padlock reads: this directory is never public and never on the website, only volunteers can search it, and your listing is never shown to the people asking.

From #psylloidea to other #hemiptera we cover answers to questions across most of #entomology and #arachnology. Submit your requests!
Poster on aged cream paper. At the top, the Ommatidium Project logo, a ring of dark blue circles around a glowing blue centre like a compound eye, above the words "The Ommatidium Project" and "at entofacet.org". On the right, a close macro photograph of two mottled brown psyllids, small winged plant lice with lacy patterned wings, resting on a green stem covered in fine white hairs. Navy text on the left reads "Find psyllids cute? Want to talk to one of only a handful of psyllid taxonomists?" and, in blue, "We know who to ask." Small italic text near the bottom reads "Experts wanted. Questions welcome. Volunteer run. Always free." A dark navy band across the base reads "entofacet.org".

The Ommatidium Project is live. Ask about any insect, mite, spider, or other invertebrate, and we connect you to the person who studies it. Free. No account to ask questions. Nothing to pay. Volunteer run. Bring on your bug questions. Or join the expertise pool. entofacet.org #entomology #bugsky
Promotional graphic for the launch of The Ommatidium Project. On the right, a spotted cucumber beetle, yellow with black spots and a black head, perches at the tip of a green serrated leaf, elytra raised and translucent hindwings spread mid-takeoff against a dark green background. On the left, over a deep navy panel, a pill-shaped outline reads "OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED." Large cream serif text below states: "The world of invertebrates is small. We'll open the door." Smaller text reads: "Ask about any insect, mite, spider, or other invertebrate, and we connect you to the person who studies it." A line beneath adds: "Free. No account. Nothing to pay. Volunteer run." A footer holds the circular blue Ommatidium Project logo with the wordmark "THE OMMATIDIUM PROJECT" and the URL "entofacet.org.

The hive is growing, we now have experts across everything from Psylloidea to Isoptera. We are always looking for more participants. Public requests launching soon. More at: entofacet.org/experts #entomology #inverts
Square promotional graphic for The Ommatidium Project on a deep navy background. At the top is the project’s compound eye logo, followed by “THE OMMATIDIUM PROJECT” and “at entofacet.org.” Across the centre are separate cream coloured branching diagrams labelled ants (Formicidae), Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Isoptera, Hemiptera, Arachnida, and Acari. Three dotted cobalt branches below end in question marks and the words “Is your group missing?” Large cream text reads, “Find your branch. Or be the first name on it,” with “branch” in cobalt italic. Smaller text explains that experts can choose what they are open to, receive one or two questions a month or fewer, and answer, pass, or pause. The footer states that the project is always free, volunteer run, and directs specialists in insects, mites, spiders, and other groups to entofacet.org/experts.

Our expert pool is growing, from Acari to Psylloidea. With the help and passion of the invertebrate science community, we hope to create a home for connections across the field. It’s also free and a passion project to help the community. Not a side hustle. #entomology #inverts
Square dark navy promotional graphic for EntoFacet. At the top is the EntoFacet compound-eye logo: six deep-blue circles around an iridescent blue-purple centre. Large cream serif text asks, “What is The Ommatidium Project?” Below, pale blue text reads, “A better front door to entomology. We help connect people with the right volunteer, society, collection, or expert.” Three outlined boxes give example questions: “How do I get started in a museum or collection?”, “Can you help me find a local society or field day?”, and “Do you know someone who works on this insect?” At the bottom, large blue-purple text reads “entofacet.org,” followed by “More questions, from insect IDs to expert referrals.”

The Ommatidium Project has sent its first expert invitations. If you were on the waitlist, check your spam folder. New domain, new system, and Google is being Google refusing to index, so some account emails are getting buried. Thank you for your patience. Questions? admin@entofacet.org #entomology
