Just retired. Love natural sciences. Live in beautiful Dorset. Will photograph anything. My garden keeps me sane. I must go back to India again. Slightly mad. Canon 7D Mk2 permanently coupled to a Canon 100-400mm Mk2 and a Canon 90D and Canon 100mm macro

The most common form of wildlife in Puglia (apart from tour-guides with flags on sticks) was the European wall lizard. Very handsome males showing off their green and certainly the best portrait of a reptile I've ever taken. #lizards

Two countries voted against making food a human right at the UN, Israel and the USA. The vote would have mandated the UN to prevent starvation, and the US and Israel didn't want to fund preventing starvation.

Wildlife during our 2 week stay in Puglia was notable by it's absence; unless you wanted corvids and wall lizards. This beauty though was worth seeing as I've tried photographing them before without luck. A Violet Carpenter Bee, Europes largest bee at 3cm. (more in +ALT) #bees #puglia

I know there is a hell of a lot going on right now. But not all of it is bad. Some is astonishingly good - like the results of this study from June. Cervical cancer is a terribly cruel thing. This might, at long last, be the beginning of the end of it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Can we get something straight... Netanyahu has an outstanding arrest warrant for war crimes issued by the ICC. The US doesn't recognise the ICC nor it's judgements, so he cannot be arrested on US soil. It's not the fault of the NYPD nor the UN, its down to the US government. End of.

Puglia stray cats update! The cats are now fatter and much less prone to watery eyes and coughs since we arrived 12 days ago. They now trust us but one kitten has gone too far and we caught her asleep under the dining table. I'll miss them when we go but I wont have one of my own when we get home.

In Puglia, Italy. Yesterday we went to Ostuni, another white-washed, hilltop town. Lots of people visiting, lots of stuff shops to waste your money in (what is it with fridge magnets?) but a pretty town with some good beers and lovely food

Currently on holiday in Puglia, Italy where they make some of my favourite food. #1... a pizza that has no mozzarella, with yellow toms, capers olives and anchovies. Without the mozz, I didn't feel bloated! #2... avocado, prawns, roasted peppers and cashews on a bed of spinach with a few capers. Fab
I'm on holiday in Puglia, Italy where I can guarantee on getting some of my favourite foods. The pic shows a 13 inch thin crust pizza. There is no mozzarella on it but it has a tomato sauce base and lots of yellow, plum tomatoes and black olives, as well as capers and a few anchovies. The ingredients are not spread evenly and it looks as if the chef just threw a handful of ingredients across the middle. It was amazing and remarkably light without the mozzarella. Perhaps I could have eaten 2.A delicious light lunch. A large white dish possibly a foot across has a meal at its centre, probably only covering 40% of the dish. Its very colourful with half a dozen pink prawns, some very ripe yellow and green avocado, yellow and red roasted peppers and beige cashew nuts. All on a bed of bright green spinach leaves. There are a few capers buried in the spinach and a very small amount of balsamic vinegar. It was absolutely amazing. All the more so because buy a ripe avocado at home, in the UK is such a lottery... you buy three to improve the odds of getting a good one... one will remain rock hard for weeks, then turn to mush inside 12 hours. One be brown inside and the other... might be ok. You can't plan to eat avocados in the UK!

Noticed here in Puglia, Italy (2 week holiday) that lots of the towns are pedestrianised. Also saw it in Krakow in May and Carcassonne in August. So it appears that the UK is not "at war with the motorist", they're simply being grown up like everyone else. So Reform can fuck right off. Wankers!

Stray cat in Puglia day 5. A little kindness, a soft lap and a shed load of cat food works wonders on the nervous wreck we met 4 days ago. We've called her "Windy"... it was going to be Wendy because she has a "W" on her forehead but she has a habit of producing the most appalling farts!
Our new friend, a stray cat we met 5 days ago when we arrived at our holiday let in Puglia, Italy, lays fast asleep on my lap looking very content. She's a short-haired tabby cat in the usual two-tone grey striped markings, with a gingery tinge to the softer hair on her chin, upper chest and inside her ears. She's quite small and thin. 5 days ago when we first met as we unlocked our holiday home, she was very vocal but wouldn't come closer than 4ft. On that day all we had to give her was a piece of parmesan cheese which she seemed to enjoy. On day 2 we bought some cat treats and fed her those and we could just about touch her with an outstretched hand. She got close enough to reveal her nipples and we realised she probably had kittens. On day 3 we found some cat food in the house and gave her that and she got a lot more comfortable with us, allowing us to stroke her. That evening we went outside to see her sitting there with 3 kiitens, probably about 12 weeks old. Day 4 and she was so close to us she almost made us trip over her several times as she wandered about our ankles. That evening she arrived for dinner with her kittens and 3 other adult cats one of which is obviously another of her offspring. That's 7 in all... 2 more tabby adults like her although one is long-haired, an all grey cat and her kittens... 2 tabbies and a white one with large black spots. Today she got on to my lap as I sat in the shade drinking a beer.. and fell asleep. The ultimate show of trust. The kittens are coming around but they are still nervous. When we leave here in 8 days time, I'll leave some food and a note in the guest book asking the next guest to be kind. You're probably asking what we call her... well we were going to call her "Wendy" because being a tabby, she has a "W" on her forehead. However after producing a couple of foul-smelling, toxic-waste level farts, we've decided that "Windy", is more appropriate! It costs next to nothing to be kind and is so incredibly rewarding.
