Interesting piece that dialogues with some of my discomfort with the term “content creator”. To me the real discomfort with “content creator” is what it does: it strips creative practices of their specificity and meaning, flattening them into a product optimized for consumption

man, if only someone had written a series of books on this subject and inspired others to do so...
Murray Bookchin, Post-Scarcity Anarchism:

Any attempt to solve the environmental crisis within a bourgeois framework must be dismissed as chimerical. Capitalism is inherently anti-ecological. Competition and accumulation constitute its very law of life, a law which Marx pungently summarized in the phrase, "production for the sake of production." Anything, however hallowed or rare, "has its price" and is fair game for the marketplace. In a society of this kind, nature is necessarily treated as a mere resource to be plundered and exploited. The destruction of the natural world, far from being the result of mere hubristic blunders, follows inexorably from the very logic of capitalist production.Murray Bookchin, Toward an Ecological Society:

Do the roots of the ecological crisis lie in population growth? This thesis is the most disquieiting, and in many ways the most sinister, to be advanced by ecology action movements in the United States. Here, an effect called “population growth,” juggled around on the basis of superficial statistics and projections, is turned into a cause. A problem of secondary proportions at the present time is given primacy, thus obscuring the fundamental reasons for the ecological crisis. True, if present economic, political and social conditions prevail, humanity will in time overpopulate the planet and by sheer weight of numbers turn into a pest in its own global habitat. There is something obscene, however, about the fact that an effect, “population growth,” is being given primacy in the ecological crisis by a nation which has little more than seven percent of the world’s population, wastefully devours more than fifty percent of the world’s resources, and is currently engaged in the depopulation of an Oriental people that has lived for centuries in sensitive balance with its environment. Chaia Heller, Ecology of Everyday Life:

After providing information regarding the status of tropical rain forests (whose living things, they report, include only plants and animals, no mention of people), they explain “tropical rain forests are rapidly disappearing due to logging and other development.” As for the solutions to these problems, Stonyfield Farm encourages children to “make a difference” by choosing to “use public transportation, carpool, walk, and don’t leave lights on when you’re not using them.” Finally, the children are warned “every time you flick on a light or go for a ride in the car, CO2 is released into the atmosphere from the coal, oil, or gas burned to make energy. Be a planet Protector!”

On the surface, Stonyfield’s message seems reasonable enough: we should each do our part to save the planet. However, it is what is left out of the message that is deeply troubling. **First, by failing to discuss file human suffering of peoples living within the ‘natures’ they represent, they separate the ecological from the social, blaming the entire society for ecological harm**. Second, Stonyfield **individualizes the problem by making no mention of institutional causes of ecological degradation such as capitalism, government, the World Trade Organization, or the military industrial complex (responsible for an overwhelming majority of pollution and resource extraction).** Children are led to believe that by failing to restrain their individual hungers for car travel and electricity, they are as responsible for causing and solving ecological problems as are those unidentified institutions responsible for logging and other development.

syllabus time, teaming up for the herculean efforts of reinventing writing assignments. here, some prompts for required weekly low stakes 250-500 word reflections/ process pieces that have proven relatively conducive to real writing in lit class. please share any similar suggestions in thread.
Describe something you learned from lecture this week that you didn’t know just from doing the readings.

Connect something you learned in 209 this week to something you are learning in another of your classes this semester.

If Monday and Wednesday assigned readings were from two different texts, make connections between the two. Do they share themes? Forms? Tone? Historical context? Do you find them equally interesting?

Look at the very first paragraph of one of our texts and discuss how the opening lays the groundwork for the rest of the work. Quote specific lines, phrases, or images.

Using quotes from a text, persuade someone (friend or foe, your grandma or your senator) to change their mind about something important.

Compose a 5 song playlist to accompany an assigned reading from this week, and write a few sentences for each song, explaining your choices.

Describe an idea you had in response to the readings/lecture/discussions for our class this week- any idea, about literature, or the world, or yourself. How might you pursue this idea, in your studies or elsewhere?

Choose a passage (no more than 10 lines) from the readings this week and rewrite it, changing at least one of the literary aspects such as: person (change from first to third-person or vice versa), tense (change from past to present etc), focalizing character (i.e. write it from a different character's perspective), style (adjectives, diction, description, tone). Then write 2-3 sentences about the effect of your changes.

Compose a yelp review to strangers, or a letter to a specific person, or a booktok style video, recommending a novel/poem/play from this week’s reading.

Write a letter to someone who has questioned your choice of majoring or minoring in English, explaining why you value what you’re learning. Include quotes / ideas from this week’s readings.
