I don't know how but we have to teach people to be better at detecting bullshit. Instead we have this ersatz skepticism where people are suspicious about the wrong things and find their way to conclusions that are worse than if they just blindly accepted conventional wisdom

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

we've had shopping list apps for years, no ai required. adding ai to the equation implies that the llm is bringing some conceptual understanding to the task and then making decisions based on that. this probably has minimal overlap with the real world experience of selecting 'good' produce.

here is a succinct thing I can say: "alignment"-style AI safety risks DO NOT EXIST or need remediation with LLMs as such (there are lots of other problems) and OpenAI and Anthropic are in the business of TRYING TO MAKE THEM EXIST so that they can remediate them.

I feel like a huge amount of ~everything that is going on with these systems, from the safety people to the researchers to users to, you know, everybody, resolves to how much fluent use of language messes with our intuitions. which, as you say, shouldn't have been a surprise, but here we are.
