@neilhimself.neilgaiman.com wishful thinking on my part. It may end up as one of my assignments for school, but will most likely land on AO3. I’m in love of every single one of these characters. Thank you for being a genius.

People, @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com is entirely right here. This is important, and not only to writers (or other artists). but for writers it’s an aspect of caring about your work, and about the people who matter in your life, and those you trust.

@neilhimself.neilgaiman.com this question comes to me during my fourth rewatch of Dead Boy Detectives, episode 7. Which might be one of my favorite episodes of any show I’ve ever seen.

@neilhimself.neilgaiman.com how do you write such depths? There are things in your stories that I’ve had hidden deep in my worst intrusive thoughts, and you put them on paper and show the world. I want to do that. How do you face the terror of facing the darkness and uncomfortable truths within?

A friend of ours suffered an unimaginable tragedy when his sister Amy was murdered by her ex yesterday. If you can, please consider a donation to their small Vermont farm sanctuary to give them financial breathing room to grieve and take a break from fundraising. www.instagram.com/p/C0MKQeMOI64/

One of the best parts of the WGA deal: AI has now hit a brick wall in Hollywood, *and that includes adaptations.* Based on the deal, AI can't be source material. So if you're a publisher, AI novels or graphic novels or whatever just became that much less appealing because *they can't be optioned.*

It's not often I'm simpatico with a fucking church sign, but this one... Yeah. I'm down with this Grace Methodist Church.
Sign outside a Grace Methodist Church: "8 MEN HAVE AS MUCH WEALTH AS 3.6 BILLION PEOPLE, BUT SURE, THE SINGLE MOM ON FOOD STAMPS IS THE PROBLEM." I'm not big on churches, but this sign, I'll co-sign.

my favorite Miss Manners column (from 2002) was on my fridge for years and it finally gave up the ghost. found it to print it out again, and it seemed selfish not to share.
DEAR MISS MANNERS: A couple of years ago, my wife and I attended the wedding of two people who had been friends of ours for years. One year ago, the woman left the man for another man. We heard all about it from the man but heard nothing from the woman as we live in separate towns.
We received a Christmas package from the woman who made no reference to her infidelity -- an act that affected all who were friends of the pair.
I felt the need to thank her for the gift and card, but I didn't feel as if I should ignore the issue of her leaving her husband. In the end, I wrote a thank-you note and told her what I thought of the situation -- not in excoriating terms but in bluntly honest ones. Was this boorish?
GENTLE READER: Yes. Had you wished to register your disapproval you could have written her a dry letter of thanks; had you wished to register extreme disapproval, you could have returned the present. Miss Manners is afraid that “Thanks, slut," is not a proper communication.

It's definitely a summary of the Campbell patterns. It doesn't fit many of my favourite stories though. It doesn't fit Alice Through the Looking Glass or The Third Policeman, The Man Who Was Thursday or The Master and Margarita, The Saragossa Manuscript. Or films like Drowning By Numbers or "If..."

The reason older books seem to disappear is that they aren't marketed after a time by publishers except for certain times, such as an adaptation or anniversary. It's up to the readers to wave them over our heads and make all our friends read them too. At least... that's what I've always done.

I don't like it because it's hard enough being an old author: a 92 year old author seeing a story they published at 22 being filmed or reprinted while they are starving would be wrong. (This is less hypothetical than you might imagine: authorsleaguefund.org)

art critiques: "brutal" honesty is a form of negative reinforcement that stifles the vitality of individual creative impulses. true constructive feedback is supportive and instructive and leads to a more positive sense of enlightenment that invests an artist in the vitality of their own creativity.

Happy birthday Mary Shelley! Fondly remembering when @zdarsky.bsky.social uncovered the first edition of Frankenstein.
The final page of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The text reads:

"He sprang from the cabin window as he said this, upon the ice raft which lay close to the vessel. He was soon borne away by the waves and lost in darkness and distance."

Underneath, handwritten in pen by good ol' Chip, the following has been added:

"As he drifted away I could just make out his final words.

"It's okay if you just call me 'Frankenstein' instead of Frankenstein's Monster.

I really don't mind."

The end"
