Happy weekend! 🦔 ❤️ Here’s a lovely ancient Egyptian blue faience hedgehog made some 3,800 years ago! Neues Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small ancient Egyptian turquoise-coloured blue faience hedgehog figurine, shown in 3/4 profile facing right. Dimensions: Height x width x depth: 5 x 5.5 x 9.3 cm. It has a rounded body densely covered with small raised pointed spines each of which are emphasised with black paint. It has a small wide face with a pointed snout. The snout has a small chip at the end. The eyes are highlighted with black pigment. It has relatively long oval-shaped ears, either side of the face. It has short stubby front legs. It sits on a pale display case surface at the Neues Museum in Berlin.

“Totoro”. Studio Gibli, Japan
Framed by the dark, silhouetted trunks of ancient trees and branches laden with vibrant magenta foliage, an enchanted woodland realm opens into a soft, luminous mist. In the foreground, perched upon an emerald-paved stone path, the small white forest spirit (Chibi-Totoro) and medium blue spirit (Chū-Totoro) sit side-by-side, their backs turned as they gaze toward the glowing horizon. Rising beyond the grassy knoll, the colossal, gentle form of the great forest guardian (O-Totoro) emerges, his immense slate-grey head and wide, inquisitive eyes peeking through the canopy. A hazy canyon and pale, layered mountain peaks drift in the background under a soft, dreamlike sky. The illustration evokes a magical sensory atmosphere: the cool, damp fragrance of moss-covered earth and spring leaves, the quiet whisper of mountain breezes through high boughs, the faint rustle of spirit footsteps along ancient stones, and the breathless, reverent awe of stepping into a hidden sanctuary of nature. Inspired by Studio Ghibli’s 1988 animated masterwork My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro), directed by Hayao Miyazaki, this stylized artwork celebrates the film’s profound roots in Shinto animism and environmental reverence. Set in the lush, agricultural satoyama landscape of Japan’s post-war countryside, the narrative re-enchants the natural world by portraying kami—indigenous spirits that inhabit ancient camphor trees, rivers, and deep woodlands—as benevolent guardians accessible through the pure, unsullied imagination of youth. Studio Ghibli’s legacy of traditional hand-drawn animation embodies the spirit of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and devotion to material craft), where thousands of hand-painted cels and richly rendered background art celebrate the textures of rain, wind, and foliage.

#RomanSiteSaturday The Roman Temple of Évora. The temple is believed to have been constructed around the 1st century CE, in honour of Augustus, who was venerated as a god during and after his rule.
The Roman Temple of Évora (Portuguese: Templo romano de Évora), also referred to as the Templo de Diana (albeit wrongly, after Diana, the ancient Roman goddess of the moon, the hunt, and chastity) is an ancient temple in the Portuguese city of Évora (civil parish of Sé e São Pedro). The temple is part of the historical centre of the city, which was included in the classification by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It represents one of the most significant landmarks relating to the Roman and Lusitanian civilizations of Évora and in Portuguese territory.

Tiger Soga Shôhaku 18th century, Japan MEDIUM/TECHNIQUEHanging scroll; ink on paper DIMENSIONSImage: 119.1 x 28.6 cm (46 7/8 x 11 ¼ in.) CREDIT LINEWilliam Sturgis Bigelow Collection
Coiled within the narrow vertical confines of a hanging scroll (kakejiku), a wildly expressive tiger (tora) surges forward with theatrical intensity. The composition is boldly cropped: at the top, a striped, bushy tail curves into the frame from above, while below, the beast's head and massive, clawed paw press dramatically against the right margin. Shōhaku renders the creature with bulging, saucer-like eyes, flared whiskers, and an almost comical grinning jaw, using dense, jet-black ink strokes contrasted against soft grey washes. Through a masterly combination of wet ink shading and dry-brush technique (kashitsu), the artist captures both the tactile softness of fur and the uncanny, pulsating vitality of a mythical predator.
Painted in the 18th century by Soga Shōhaku (1730–1781), this ink painting (suibokuga) exemplifies the radical spirit of one of Edo-period Japan's celebrated "eccentric" painters (ki-jin). Rejecting the polished, orthodox styles of the state-sanctioned Kanō and Tosa academies, Shōhaku sought inspiration in the uninhibited, expressive brushwork of medieval Muromachi-period masters. Because tigers were not native to Japan, Edo artists had no opportunity to observe them live, relying instead on imported pelts, domestic cats, and traditional Chinese or Korean paintings. Shōhaku transformed this lack of direct observation into a triumph of imaginative monozukuri (artisanal mastery), channeling classical dragon-and-tiger motifs into a fiercely idiosyncratic, humorously exaggerated portrait that challenged the artistic norms of his day.

PAINTED TERRACOTTA SARCOPHAGUS FROM KLAZOMENAI, 520-480 BCE. BRITISH MUSEUM

A massive painted terracotta sarcophagus displayed with its gabled lid suspended on a white metal frame above the main rectangular body. A glass panel covers the opening of the tub. The heavy terracotta construction features painted decoration on its exterior and interior rims. While these immense objects were ultimately sunk deep into the earth of Archaic Ionia with only their heavy gabled roofs visible, the exterior walls were painted to be seen during the ekphora or grand funeral procession and the public viewing of the deceased before burial. The visible exterior shows geometric patterns and broad bands of reddish and dark brown slip against the light clay background.
