Restarting the reading of “the water margin”, been on my nightstand for a year and got to about a third. Now with two weeks holiday and getting away from electronics, this has the ideal thickness and word density, what is not to like! Kicks of with one of the best dedications ever.. #booksky

SCOOP: 404 Media placed a tracking device in a shipment of rare books to see which AI company was buying it. What did we find? It ended up at an Amazon facility where Amazon scans and destroys books. Yes. This is literally the logo outside the Amazon warehouse door. Read now:

I got this is a present in 2009, just reading it now, ahum. From R. Crumb, a signed copy, translated in Dutch and true to the original text. Plus a possible explanation why men would present their wife as their sister when visiting a foreign stronghold, inevitably leading to wrong outcomes! #booksky

This was on my reading list but then saw the interview by @jasmine.bsky.social with Benjamin Labatut I took it of my wishlist and started reading. What a book, what a writer and yes: disturbing. If you are interested in the giants of 20th century science, the origins of computing and go… #booksky

Cover of “The Maniac” by Benjamin Labatut

Excerpt from the book: With Johnny, we can never be so sure. After all when the divine reaches down to touch the Earth, it is not a happy meeting of opposites, a joyous union between matter and spirit. It is rape. A violent begetting. A sudden invasion, a violence that must be later purified by sacrifice.

My partner took some pictures of what I first thought was a tree or bush, but it is a structure, I think built by a bee or perhaps a wasp? From what I recall it used a toilet-roll (which is also typically re-used for growing plant seedlings in case you wonder).

I had a small conundrum today: when visiting the tailor for a bespoke suit, what should I wear? Should I wear the best that I have or at least something that doesn’t solicit a cry of despair? This graphic, created for Bill Gates' website, shows that diseases transmitted by mosquitoes are responsible for vastly more human deaths than other animals. While sharks inspire fear in many, they kill few people.
