The proposed social media ban, the EU KIDS Act, is perhaps the most chaotic law I have ever read! New paper: Are EU Kidding Me? Notes from a Poorly Drafted Social Media Ban. files.michae.lv/papers/veale_areEUkiddingme.pdf In the spirit of the proposal I have stayed offline and read no takes.
In September 2026, the European Commission published a proposed EU KIDS Act, responding to the demand for restrictions and further design obligations applying to digital services accessible to children, including social media. This Article argues that regardless of what one believes about the merits of this policy direction, the EU KIDS Act is not the legislative text we need. The scope and drafting are little short of chaotic, full of holes, enormous ambiguities, and unintended consequences. Recitals contradict articles. The use of scope borrowed from other pieces of legislation not designed for this purpose brings services into scope that should not be subject to the relevant provisions, like book-recommendation websites, music services, or exercise trackers. The infrastructural requirement for assurance of age and parental responsibility attestation simply omits enormous issues of complex families and childhoods. Complex design obligations are written in ways that can be plausibly interpreted as implicitly prohibiting entire swathes of products, such as voice assistants. This Article outlines these issues, and many more. The Commission should withdraw this proposal and reissue a workable and realistic text.

I don't use GenAI because I want to be capable of doing my work. I want my work to be my work. I want my successes to be *my* successes. And I want to do the work that I can only do if I don't have GenAI getting in my way. Each author and intellectual should have this conversation with themselves.

People have said this while summarizing my “rogue” article, but I don’t like this phrasing very much. It neglects the bad design decision of releasing products that drift from the target and structurally amplify the drift. “They only do what their designers allow them to do” is slightly better.

Can I just say because it probably isn't said enough: @timnitgebru.blacksky.app @emilymbender.bsky.social were specifically extremely correct in their "stochastic parrots" paper on their environmental risk warnings and narrowly, on the unjust burden of impacts: s10251.pcdn.co/pdf/2021-ben...
ENVIRONMENTAL AND FINANCIAL COST
Strubell et al. recently benchmarked model training and development costs in terms of dollars and estimated 퐶푂2 emissions [129].
While the average human is responsible for an estimated 5t 퐶푂2푒
per year,2
the authors trained a Transformer (big) model [136] with
neural architecture search and estimated that the training procedure
emitted 284t of 퐶푂2. Training a single BERT base model (without
hyperparameter tuning) on GPUs was estimated to require as much
energy as a trans-American flight.
While some of this energy comes from renewable sources, or
cloud compute companies’ use of carbon credit-offset sources, the
authors note that the majority of cloud compute providers’ energy is
not sourced from renewable sources and many energy sources in the
world are not carbon neutral. In addition, renewable energy sources
are still costly to the environment,3
and data centers with increasing
computation requirements take away from other potential uses ofgreen energy,4 underscoring the need for energy efficient model
architectures and training paradigms.
Strubell et al. also examine the cost of these models vs. their
accuracy gains. For the task of machine translation where large
LMs have resulted in performance gains, they estimate that an
increase in 0.1 BLEU score using neural architecture search for
English to German translation results in an increase of $150,000
compute cost in addition to the carbon emissions. To encourage
more equitable access to NLP research and reduce carbon footprint,
the authors give recommendations to report training time and
sensitivity to hyperparameters when the released model is meant
to be re-trained for downstream use. They also urge governments to
invest in compute clouds to provide equitable access to researchers.
When we perform risk/benefit analyses of language technology,
we must keep in mind how the risks and benefits are distributed,
because they do not accrue to the same people. On the one hand, it
is well documented in the literature on environmental racism that
the negative effects of climate change are reaching and impacting
the world’s most marginalized communities first [1, 27].6
Is it fair or
just to ask, for example, that the residents of the Maldives (likely to
be underwater by 2100 [6]) or the 800,000 people in Sudan affectedThese models are being developed at a time when unprecedented environmental changes are being witnessed around the
world. From monsoons caused by changes in rainfall patterns due
to climate change affecting more than 8 million people in India,9
to the worst fire season on record in Australia killing or displacing
nearly three billion animals and at least 400 people,10 the effect
of climate change continues to set new records every year. It is
past time for researchers to prioritize energy efficiency and cost
to reduce negative environmental impact and inequitable access
to resources — both of which disproportionately affect people who
are already in marginalized positions.

This tracks with my experience peer reviewing heavily AI-generated papers—just crazy that it’s happening at this scale, with claims of disrupting an entire field. I feel bad for the mathematicians who have to sort through all this. They should get paid.
Screenshot that reads: “ Producing rigorous mathematical papers is difficult work under even the best of circumstances. Doing so at this kind of scale is a formidable undertaking. OpenAI’s models are pumping out mathematics at a dizzying speed and across a broad range of specialities, far outstripping the capacity of its human staff. The company simply does not have the breadth of expertise or resources to properly scrutinize its findings at the cutting edge of mathematics. Researchers told The Verge that it shows.

Many described papers that were difficult, sometimes practically impossible, to follow. “The write-up of the problem I know best made little sense after a quick read,” Brendan Hassett, a mathematics professor at Brown, told The Verge. “If this had been written by a person, I wouldn’t spend any more time trying to understand it. Of course, this leaves 721 other preprints!” (Hassett said this before OpenAI retracted three papers).”

the latest anthropic cry abt "cruelty" & "abuse" of ai is truly stupid. i beg journalists to stop parroting amodei we wrote why dehumanisation of ai is impossible & 6+ yrs later, everything in this paper holds Robot Rights? Let’s Talk about Human Welfare Instead dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1...
Yet we disagree robots should be treated as ‘slaves’. In defense
of her position, Bryson states: “But surely dehumanization is only
wrong when it’s applied to someone who really is human?” Our
position would be that ‘dehumanization’ is not so much wrong
for robots, it is impossible. One cannot dehumanize something
that wasn’t human to begin with. If one uses the term slave, one
implicitly assumes that the being one so names is the kind of being
can be ‘dehumanized’. One has already implicitly ‘humanized’ the
robot, before subsequently enslaving it. One should obviously not
enslave someone first taken to be human.

it's good to see this laid out clearly, but i'm once again going to point to Peter Naur's 1985 essay "Programming as Theory Building"
The present discussion is a contribution to the understanding of what programming is. It suggests that programming properly should be regarded as an activity by which the programmers form or achieve a certain kind of insight, a theory, of the matters at hand. This suggestion is in contrast to what appears to be a more common notion, that programming should be regarded as a production of a program and certain other texts.
