Don Dunstan’s cookbook and the lost ambition of social democracy
One hundred years ago Don Dunstan was born and 50 years ago, in October 1976, the then South Australian premier published a cookbook. It sounds like a charming eccentricity of the era. It was actually a small expression of a much larger political idea.

“Studies have previously shown an association btwn tree cover & public health outcomes. The new study is novel bc it tracks how the tree canopy expands or contracts in response to development, natural disasters & other forces, &how those changes in turn appear to correlate to communitywide health”🛟🧪
“When it comes to urban trees, old is gold.
Many cities across the country, including New York, have been planting trees in neighborhoods where cooling shade has been sparse because of neglect in decades past. But a new study has found that simply adding trees is not enough: To get the most from tree cover, communities also have to preserve older ones.
Polt we take care of trees, they take care of us, and might even help save our lives," said Harrison C. Garcia, a student at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and the lead author on the study. "They're not just a luxury. They're not just something to look at."”

Behind them, the north wall of the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, covered with Barbara Kruger's "Untitled (Questions)" mural: against a field of stark red, white letters that read, in part, WHO IS BEYOND THE LAW? WHO IS BOUGHT AND SOLD? WHO DOES THE TIME? WHO SALUTES LONGEST? WHO DIES FIRST? WHO LAUGHS LAST
