My brother and I both attended French immersion elementary school in the US. For a few summers we put up a "nous parlons français" sign on our lemonade stand and sold out to Quebec tourists. I am sure larger US businesses can do it too.

It is Pride Month. Throughout this month, I will be sharing the stories of how Canadians fought for equality. Today it is the story of Halpern v Canada.
A black-and-white newspaper page with the large headline Court rules for same-sex unions. Below the headline is a dark photo of two people embracing or kissing, followed by an article headed Today is the death of homophobia. The article discusses a court ruling recognizing same-sex couples and includes quotes from people reacting emotionally to the decision. Smaller surrounding headlines include SARS inquiry launched and other news items, with car advertisements along the bottom.

Hard to fit in this format but one can draw a through line from accepting logics that treat non citizens or military scenarios as outside the law to where the US is today. This is bad for the obvious reason. But it also means that things are more chaotic for the remaining judges as cases get reassigned. Firing more judges at once degrades working conditions so checking the government is that much harder.

The obvious answer here is that the student protest movement was broadly smeared as anti-semitic and aligned with terrorists, and a variety of institutions from government, media and the universities acted as if that smear was true, threatening, suspending, expelling and even deporting students.
