I'm sure the Kremlin was delighted we voted to leave the EU, but I also think it's passing the buck to blame it on Russian interference. Russia's role in Brexit was tiny compared to that of unscrupulous hedgies, ambitious politicians and decades of lies from right wing newspapers.

Note the right lateral offset of the yellow centerline of you look across the fault. (Traffic spotters had my back for this quick snap).
A road through the central coast of California, as viewed from the central line of the highway, looking off into the distance before the road turns. There’s mountains in the background and a few oak trees on the side of the road, but the important feature is at the bottom of the photo where there’s a rumble piece of asphalt that goes across the entire highway. That is the San Andreas fault and if you look across the rumble area, you can easily see the yellow center line has been offset to the right by a couple inches. this offset has happened within the last 10 years or so as they frequently repave this section.

In 2016, Leuven made a bold decision: instead of trying to accommodate ever-increasing car traffic, it would change the rules of the road entirely. A decade later, the Dutch-inspired traffic circulation plan has drastically improved the city’s accessibility, liveability and quality of public space.🧵

Leuven might be the best cycling city you’ve never heard of. 37% of trips are by bike; not by accident, but by years of rethinking streets, reducing car dominance and recirculating traffic. While the large capitals attract most headlines, Leuven is another example of a small city making big moves.

World's wildlife down 73% since 1970, but India's big cats defy the slide
The world’s monitored wildlife populations have shrunk by an average of 73 per cent in 52 years, according to WWF’s Living Planet Report 2026, released on October 8. But the report, produced with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), argues the slide is not inevitable, and points to India’s big cats as evidence. The Living Planet Index draws on 35,803 population trends across 5,790 vertebrate species between 1970 and 2022. Freshwater ecosystems fared worst, with an 85 per cent fall, followed by terrestrial (69 per cent) and marine (59 per cent). Latin America and the Caribbean saw the steepest regional decline at 95 per cent, then Africa at 80 per cent and Asia-Pacific at 49 per cent. North America (28 per cent) and Europe and Central Asia (23 per cent) show smaller falls, partly because large-scale damage there predates 1970. The figure does not mean 73 per cent of animals have vanished. It is the average proportional change in monitored populations. Half of those populations are stable (7 per cent) or increasing (43 per cent), but the declines are larger than the gains. Habitat loss is the most commonly reported threat, followed by overexploitation, climate change, pollution, invasive species and...

The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency @leefomgeving.bsky.social has updated its analysis for local heat planning. By the end of 2027, municipalities will need to have plans in place for every area. Compared to 2025: - All-electric heat pumps doubled - Hybrids + 'climate-neutral' gas gone
Difference between the 2025 and 2026 analyses. The figures show that the proportion of individual electric heat pumps has almost doubled, rising from around one-third to two-thirds of the total number of connections. Hybrid heat pumps using climate-neutral gas, which accounted for around one-third of the total in 2025, are no longer included in the 2026 analysis.
