when the Roman practice spread to Germanic lands, they used local gods with similar profiles. thus: Sun → Sunday Moon → Monday Mars (war) → Tyr → Tuesday Mercury (magic) → Odin/Wodnaz → Wednesday Jupiter (storms) → Thor → Thursday Venus → Frigg → Friday Saturn → Saturday

the seven days of the week in Latin were named after the seven "travelers" (planetes), visible celestial lights (associated with gods) that noticeably changed position relative to the stars: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn Latin-derived languages maintain most of these roots

I was honestly kinda disappointed by the latest "Otherwords." like, you're really gonna tell us the planets are named after gods… and English days of the week are named after gods… and so are the days of the week in Romance languages… but not draw any lines between the three?!

I am entirely serious when I say that this should be seen as a moderate position. It specifically and surgically dismantles institutions that did not exist pre-9/11 and assigns their functions much as they were assigned pre-9/11.

finally watching SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN, on the recommendation of @dresdencodak.com weird to think I was very close to Lain's age at the time it first aired in 1998

watched HALLOWEEN for the first time tonight, and my prevailing thought was: high school babysitters, in 1978? that's my mom. Jamie Lee Curtis is just a few years older than my mom

and I have to wonder what was going through the minds of both performers and audience in Berlin in 1944 as they sang and heard "may heaven forgive you"

Lorelei @alorelei.com · 10/10/2026
so back in college, I went digging for the music used in this Disney animated film, and I still have in my possession what was then (maybe still now) considered the definitive recording of MARTHA by the Chor und Orchester der Staatsoper, Berlin in 1944

this is the context for when we, the audience, are told not to be too hard on Tetti Tatti, because he didn't understand the "miracle," and because Willie is in Heaven now anyway, singing with a hundred voices and what is Willie singing? "Mag der Himmel euch vergeben," from Flotow's opera MARTHA
100
Lorelei @alorelei.com · 10/10/2026
I must note, Willie is Black-coded he is literally dark-skinned when we first meet him, he is singing "Short'nin' Bread" (he's discovered with the help of his well-meaning seagull friend "Whitey") he has the enthusiasm and support of the hired working-class sailors, but not Professor Tetti Tatti

hell, why not: WILLIE THE OPERATIC WHALE is about a whale who can sing in fact, he can sing in three voices simultaneously: tenor, baritone, and bass a "miracle" that the head of the Metropolitan Opera insists is theft (this whale must have swallowed three opera singers!) and punishes with death

Lorelei @alorelei.com · 10/10/2026
I'm reconfiguring my music library and Flotow's MARTHA is next in the queue and I'm tempted to pop off on WILLIE THE OPERATIC WHALE again

thinking of THE SWAN PRINCESS in part b/c I watched a video of one of the songs with very obviously computer-generated subtitles most egregiously "Derek and Odette" rendered as "dairy candle debt" but also amused by "love" being so unintelligible it leaned onto the choir with "my idea of LORD"

I don't remember if we stuck around to watch the decidedly-less-appealing sequel, but I'll never forget that moment of shared excitement and disappointment, a silly little burst of unexpected camaraderie cutting through any sibling tension there may have been at the time

Lorelei @alorelei.com · 10/10/2026
gasp! THE SWAN PRINCESS was a big hit with us! something for everyone! we were on the edge of our seats waiting for the full title "place yer bets!" "it's gotta be!" "hold on, we won't know until…" the scrawl reached its sparkling revelation: THE SWAN PRINCESS… **3** a collective, laughing groan

recalling a fond childhood memory: my brothers and I were flipping through TV channels for something we could agree on to watch. it was the turn of the hour, so we had a shot of catching something from the start, when we stumbled upon a black screen, just beginning a familiar slow golden scrawl

They’re live-streaming the execution of the person they think they can get away with doing that to first. It’s a test. If they can do that, they’ll expand the margins of permission.

phlebotomist had to draw from the back of my hand for the first time today the double-whammy of feminizing HRT: you require more blood tests, but your veins become harder to locate I used to bleed so well

anyway, I'm happy my computer is working, happy to have a clean install, happy to have the external drive as a failsafe in case the internal one decides to pull the rug out from under me again

Lorelei @alorelei.com · 26/09/2026
update: I installed and (mostly) configured my programs on the external boot drive today, so then I decided to shut down, unplug, and try one more time to get the internal drive working, just for fun folks… it worked

that "best tv shows" list almost totally excludes animation and all-ages programming (the one exception I notice at a glance is BOJACK HORSEMAN) no AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER, no SCAVENGERS REIGN, nothing unserious conversation also as always fuck the new york times

For 10 years, being a singer was my job. Then I went on gender-affirming Testosterone and lost my voice. Now I’m training it back up — please enjoy this video where both of me are singing together. 💚 youtu.be/xJ9txYOHAXc?...

[3 con't]…that any comment read on the show must be fulfilled (as long as it doesn't interfere with RTFEDD) 4) as punishment for the violation, all sports racers had to dress up their vacuums and send pictures because "we're all in this together, right?"

wait a tick, 9-18 isn't lost media, not entirely! it just isn't on the YouTube playlist! I watched my copy of the video, and can clarify that: 1) it was "something from the comments" day 2) a commenter requested a happy week 3) ze tried to divert to serious issues, but the LOA informed him…

The Muppet Show once did this great bit where they had Kermit sing and dance to "Happy Feet" the gag was, we only ever got the standard torso-up view of Kermit, we never saw his feet they later doubled down, including the song on a soundtrack album www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-OP...
