1/x Two of the best-known coats on any high street began as working kit for sailors on cold decks. Both carry names from my little corner of the North Sea: Duffel, a small town near Antwerp, and the Dutch word "pij". The story of the duffel coat and the peacoat. #maritimehistory

Who's the billionaire behind London’s biggest mass eviction?
He's the London philanthropist who says he's committed to solving homelessness. So why is Asif Aziz's Criterion Capital rushing to make hundreds of Londoners homeless in the coming weeks?

Abba's hit song Waterloo begins with the lyric "My! My! At Waterloo, Napoleon did surrender." But any student of European history could tell you that Napoleon didn't surrender until some 5 weeks later, in Rochefort, about 400 miles away on the west coast of France. So come on, ABBA. Magazine Letter:
It's recently occurred to me that nobody I've ever met has actually seen a mole in real life. Apparently they live underground, but I've never heard any explain how can they breathe down there. On top of that, in every picture I've seen of a mole, they don't seem to have a speck of dirt on them. I reckon moles are just a rumour started by someone who owns a trowel factory.
