Horse Around the House ran Friday nights on NBC from May to August 1997. Unusually for a family sitcom of its type, the episodes were largely unscripted, and an untrained horse was present in almost every shot thanks to misallocated art council funding. Director Johnston Buckle refused retakes, leading to disagreements on set; episodes were subject to frequent rewrites to accommodate unexpected horse behaviour or injured actors.

This tabletop roleplaying game allows you to create your own version of the final episode of Horse Around the House: the infamous season one finale.

HORSE PANIC (AND CAST INJURY)
The untrained horse does not want to be here. Make no mistake: this and indeed every horse is filled to the skin with nothing but hot madness and electric fear.

The Panic Stack begins at four dice. Every time a player does something that frightens, angers, confuses or excites the horse, add a D6 on top of the others:

+1D6 Anyone approaches, makes eye contact with or directly references the horse
+2D6 Anyone touches the horse
+2D6 The horse hears a sudden, loud, or incongruous noise
+2D6 Horse witnesses a new shadow and has a minor existential crisis
+3D6 Banner, streamer or flag visible to horse
+3D6 Plastic bag behaves in a way the horse believes is suspicious
+4D6+ Gunshot, car crash, dog attack, etc

Inevitably, the stack of dice will topple, which represents pressure-cooker insanity exploding out of the horse and into its surroundings. When this happens, check all the dice that have fallen off, and look for the highest matching set of results. Reset the stack to four and continue.

BUCKLE’S DEMANDS
Buckle (via the GM) will issue direction to the cast via earpieces you are forbidden to remove: do it again with more passion, introduce your sub-plot, involve the horse, submit before the horse, etc. You must perform these actions and you must attempt to work them into the narrative thread of the scene and episode. If you don’t (or can’t), the sound of Buckle’s disapproval - a low-frequency growl he learned from a tiger - adds 2D6 to the Panic Stack, placed by you.

I wanted to love it, but Avowed is an inversion of what I wanted. The combat feels pretty good, and the world feels big and explorable. But nothing seem to react to you at all; either in the narrative, or in the larger systems (like NPCs). It's hard to Role Play when you feel like a ghost.

one of the first times I played Qud, I mindswapped a multiverse clone of a psychic assassin who was trying to kill me. Unfortunately - I hadn’t realized that multiverse clones get sent back to their dimension after a few seconds. And Qud does not simulate alternate realities. I died.

Caves of Qud is all about ethical choices that matter. For example, I just saw a pair of tortoises beating a dog to death and my first instinct was to intervene, but then I reconsidered, as my high reputation with tortoises is not something I want to risk
