At the Danish Consulate event in SF today, I was asked to demo SkyMapper. I pulled out my phone, connected to Volker’s telescope in Mainz, Germany, and observed NGC 891, ~30 million light-years away. A global telescope network in your pocket. app.skymapper.io

I’ve been an astronomer for 30 years, and there are still beautiful objects I’ve never observed. Tonight, from my sofa in San Francisco, I used S. Lancelle telescope in Caledonia, Wisconsin, through the SkyMapper network to observe the Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) for the first time. Sharing your sky.

Captured today in broad daylight from San Francisco using SkyViewer on app.skymapper.io. Dark nights are back in Finland! I used one of our Finnish telescopes for a 10-min observation of the Fireworks Galaxy (NGC 6946), 25 million light-years away. Astronomy without borders!

Excited to be a speaker at Astronomy @ 250, celebrating 250 years of astronomy in the US — and looking toward the next 250. I believe astronomy’s future will be more connected, decentralized and participatory, bringing many more people into the adventure of discovery. See you Aug 27–29!

Four years after we started working on this project, LaserSETI of @setiinstitute.bsky.social has finally arrived under the extraordinary skies of AlUla, Saudi Arabia. We are now assembling, aligning and preparing the two instruments at Manara. Still work to do. More soon.

Juneteenth is a day to reflect on the history and legacy of slavery. For me, this is personal too. Some of my ancestors in Réunion Island were probably enslaved. Their lives, their resilience, and what they endured are part of my history. Remembering matters. #juneteenth

Walking through Toulouse tonight, where I grew up, while friends, colleagues, and family message me as they watch me on national French TV talking about extraterrestrial life… I think of the 20-year-old who left this country believing he had no future here. Que de chemin parcouru.

I am on French national TV tonight talking about the search for life in the universe and why I believe we will get an answer very soon to this question. www.france.tv/france-2/dir...

Artemis II is on its way back from the far side of the Moon . Our @skymapper.bsky.social network picked it up from Chile ahead of its Pacific splashdown. Safe travels home, NASA astronauts — what a journey!

I believe I captured the Artemis II spacecraft on its way to the Moon using a @unistellar.bsky.social telescope connected from Chile on the @skymapper.bsky.social network. The power of network-driven science! Better movie soon but here the proof.

Radical idea: Generation Beta may be the last humans as we know them. Kids born today will grow up with genetic upgrades, AI-enhanced minds, and lifespans with no clear limit. If you’re raising them, you’re holding the hinge of history, the final “old humanity,” and the architects of what comes next

Recent events raise legitimate questions about the president capability to carry out the duties of the office. When medical concerns or persistent communication issues become impossible to ignore, it’s not about politics — it’s about ensuring that the country is being led with clarity and stability.

Fantastic work by Ariel Graykowski and our @setiinstitute.bsky.social citizen scientists. Comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) is breaking apart — and some of you caught it live. After passing 0.3 AU from the Sun, it erupted, and three days later a third appeared. K1 is now officially in pieces.

Gave two talks at the MacMillan Space Centre in Vancouver on Friday evening to a wonderfully diverse and curious crowd. We explored the @setiinstitute.bsky.social , LaserSETI, and of course @skymapper.bsky.social Loved the questions, the energy, and the conversation.

New observations of comet 3I/ATLAS show it’s exactly where predictions said it would be. No mystery, no breakup. Scientists shouldn’t post rough guesses as headlines — and journalists should stop amplifying them. Let’s focus on the real science, not manufactured drama.

It’s the first time I’ve ever watched Jimmy Kimmel, but today feels special for our country. Our freedoms and the principles that make this a truly free nation—free speech , respect for science, and a fair system of justice—are what unite us as Americans. Let’s stand together to protect them.

🚨 Possible brightening in comet 3I/ATLAS! Observers report an uptick since Sept 17 (UTC). Our @Unistellar data shows 2 points brighter than predicted—promising but sparse. As 3I nears the Sun it’s getting tougher to spot, so more observations in the next few nights are key! #exocomet

Amazing work and reactivity from our @setiinstitute.bsky.social @unistellarusa.bsky.social citizen network of astronomers. We detected the interstellar comet this weekend with our mighty small telescopes. Some are obvious, others are very close to a bright star, But 3I/Atlas is here. #citizenscience

Humpback whales are making bubble rings during friendly encounters with humans—those are creative, playful, & unexplained. How did no one connect this to Arrival’s alien ring language? On Wednesday, the skies over northern Europe lit up as a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket made an uncontrolled re-entry. Sightings were reported, with debris even found in Poland. The Fripon network tracked it—but should we be doing more to prevent space junk from crashing back to Earth? #SpaceDebris
