Considering I had to repeatedly tell @solstrider.bsky.social not to buy me a rapier at the renfaire*, this is hilariously apt. *not because I don’t want one, mind, but because I’d rather save for a custom one

Frankly it is unfair that there was an episode of Jeopardy! with categories such as "Broadway Musicals By Song," "Science," "Recaps of Shakespeare" AND the double meme whammy of "False Berlin" and "Bizarre Little Men" and I didn't get to be on it. I would have RUN that board.

Today I learned that the Nintendo shop will actively warn you if you're about to buy a game, controller or other peripheral for a console you do not have linked to your account. Related: yes, I am certain I want to preorder a game for a console I don't have yet, I am TRYING to buy that console.

LRP: I'm truly only bringing it up because I did not realize just how few people (re: gentiles) remember or paid attention to that. It does not invalidate anything about his activism or support of Palestine, but It DOES make seeing him being depicted as an unproblematic force of good land poorly.

I didn’t want to bring it up because of all the “well actually’s” it was gonna draw but I’ve been waiting to see if anyone was gonna say something or if you were all just gonna memory hole this.

The Book of Life is obviously not a Rosh Hashanah movie, it’s a Día de los Muertos one, and yet I still feel like it’s the right holiday/movie pairing. Anyway! L’shana tovah, have some apples and honey, and please be understanding as your Jewish friends’ calendars get confusing for a while.

Obligatory 9/11 thoughts: I remember my 4th grade teacher telling anyone in the class who knew LITERALLY ANYONE in NYC to call them THAT SECOND using the classroom phone. There were two of us. I’m the daughter of an emergency comms person; I remember telling her phones would be overloaded.

Couldn’t shake the desire to watch North and South or Newsies, which was odd until I remembered what day it was. I can indeed be subtly influenced. Happy Labor Day, solidarity forever!

For someone without kids or a car (or even a driver’s license), I get a lot of junk mail about school programs to enroll my kids in and ways to lower my car insurance costs. I get casting a wide net, but my friends, you are trying to fish for a bird on this one.

I knew The Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack* by heart by the time I was ten because my dad played it in the car constantly. I quote Three Musketeers constantly. Ferngully was on repeat. Thanks for the weird and wonderful childhood, Tim Curry.

Half of visiting my grandmother is stealthily throwing away her blatantly expired food. Like, no, grandma, I do not think the whipped cream cheese from the corner deli from my last visit over a month ago is still good, actually, nor is the goat cheese with a layer of fuzzy mold.

So if we’re ignoring the time period and sticking with grandparents, hi, I’m either a chemical engineer, a math professor, or work in public relations—so not too far off what I actually do. If great-grandparents, I’m a civil engineer, garment worker, or some kind of farmer.

As someone who grew up going to Corning, the fall of American-made Pyrex (and Steuben County craftsman glass factories in general, although the museum is trying to restore some of this—it makes the Pyrex borosilicate scientific glass) is something my family is STILL incensed about.

Atlas V is an incredible rocket, and one I will miss dearly. Last night the final Atlas V 551 put on a show that can only be described as breathtaking. I have had one shot in mind for this variant for years, and not only did I finally get it on my last chance, it might be my best work yet.
A close up view of an Atlas V launch showing the detailed engine exhaust under the aft of the rocket. Smoke obscures most of the bottom of the frame with the launch mast barely visible behind the rocket at the top of the frame

LRP: Everyone sleeps on the Cloisters, but they run some fantastic special exhibitions, have GORGEOUS herb and medieval gardens, and the area around the museum itself is a beautiful park with views of the Hudson and the Palisades. Also, yeah, the Unicorn tapestries are a must see at least once.

A new cohort of The Writing Circle is kicking off! This is a six month small group writing support group: 2 coworking sessions a week, 1 monthly craft chat, and feedback. Join for a supportive writing community that will help you level up in your work. www.katherinelockebooks.com/writing-circle
The Writing Circle opens on June 1st. Let's talk about why this is the group you need to unlock your writing. The writing circle is: accountability in weekly coworking sessions, community in the coworking sessions, and in our new discord server, monthly craaft chats, manuscript feedback from an award-winning author (that's me!) and monthly office hours to pick my brain about the industry, querying, or story problems. An image of a goose writing in the corner. If you feel stuck... the writing circle is a place to learn different approaches to story, brainstorm, pick my brain, pick the brains of other writers, learn new craft techniques and...that's right. Stop procrastinating. Make a plan each week to show up for one or both writing sessions to hold yourself accountable. A goose is reading books in the corner.Find your writing community: the internet's changed. I found my first critique partners on Twitter--but that kind of organic connection is harder to find. The writing circle is a true community full of trustworthy writers who are rooting for you and your success. It's a place to be honest and vulnerable. It's a place to grow and challenge yourself. (A goose is carrying a lot of books)
