This by Courtney Maum is where I am too. I am grateful to her for the words...
For me, the subject of AI detection is an ouroboros. I’ll speak only for myself, here is my opinion. I didn’t ask for artificial intelligence. It’s not something I need, it is not something I desire. And yet, it barged its way into my life and stole all of my books. All of them. Stole them. Trained off of them. Did not compensate me for this theft. So now, AI can write a book like me, because it stole my own work and learned my breed of humor and satire. So if someone runs an AI text detector on my creative output, it will probably “test positive” why? Because AI is a contaminant that has embedded itself into my work by stealing it and using my own work to perpetuate itself. It will test for itself and find AI there because it AI is a virus that has contaminated the DNA of my current and future writing—a form of intellectual rape. A kind of colonization. A raging plague that some gatekeepers are opening the door for.

If you ask me what I’m currently working on, the answer is nothing book-length. I’m not going to publish a new book in this current landscape. That’s a stance of privilege, I recognize that. And I can’t hold this stance forever, I can hold it as long as I have savings from my last book.

This current literary climate isn’t acceptable. It is not acceptable to have a thing thrust upon us that takes absolutely everything, and then be forced to prove that we are not the thieves.

short upon shorter timescales. we should be enjoying what little time we have, what we love, however we can. but then some small group of assholes who don't enjoy anything have to ruin it for everybody else in their pursuit of.. what? i don't even know. Original Warhols? cool, hug em in hell I guess

To me, this sums up why having researchers with a range of backgrounds and life experiences is so critical to scientific innovation. We all experience different chaos and develop unique abilities to solve our way out of it. Science is poorer when it does not draw from many different lives.
Sometimes inspiration came from unexpected places. Hamilton would often bring her daughter, Lauren, to the lab with her on nights and weekends. Lauren, then four years old, liked to play astronaut in the team’s simulators, and one day, pressing buttons at random, she caused a spectacular software crash. Hamilton investigated and found that Lauren had confused the program by keying in a pre-launch sequence, called P01, “in the middle of the mission,” she says.

kind of resenting my return to academic shitposting when i'm still counting small increments of time since losing my Dad. two weeks today. it feels like this sharp dividing line, one of what i guess are many before/after moments in one's life.

as part of my processing (admittedly a little bit keeping myself busy) I’ve tasked myself with digitizing and preserving family photos. Grandma had so many albums, going back to the 1800s.. how do I store these to preserve them? Any recommendations for where to get archival quality albums?
Three very old photo albums are sitting on a couch, two of them opened to pages of photos from the 1930s and 1960s. The main photo subject is a young woman; she is my paternal grandmother.

I did a neighborhood art show today. Figured my Dad would’ve been irked if I didn’t, but I couldn’t help but recognize that it was his spinning wheel enabling that helped make me the yarn monster I am today. 😇🥲
The front porch of a craftsman style house. Skeins of yarn are hanging from the siding, and hand knit garments are on every flat surface. A man is sitting on a patio chair, working on his laptop. The other side of the patio, yarn hanging from the siding. A circular rug is on the concrete, and a set of macrame curtains is on the far end of the porch.A red lace shawl is hanging from gray macrame ropes. Trees and sunlight are visible through the open parts of the lace.A small memorial sits on a column of a porch. A photo shows a man and a woman and their daughter, in her PhD regalia. The caption reads, “For my Dad, who bought me my first spinning wheel in 2008.” A tea light is lit to the right of the photo.

oof. 'wake me up when September ends' hits. sigh. I forgot to include his name- brain has called in sick. James Everett Aarnio, 3/7/1947 - 9/23/2026. Digging through photos-I opened boxes unopened from when she passed in 2015, found my grandma's family homestead in MN! Road trip time..
A photo from the 1980s: a 40-ish man and an elderly couple are standing in front of a white and red Cessna plane. A small boy and girl are standing in front of the man. He is, naturally, wearing aviator sunglasses, and he is my Dad. The elderly couple are his parents, Laila and Elmer, and they are Finnish AF.

one more favorite, for good measure.. my alibi for march 22, 1987
A man in a trucker hat bigger than his entire head is standing in front of a red and white Cessna airplane. A seven year old boy in a blue and white t-shirt and jeans is standing a few feet behind him, and a 3 year old girl with a glow worm plush and ridiculously wild curly hair is photobombing in the lower right corner of the photo. Because she went on her first flights with her Dad as pilot, she will go on to never be afraid of flying.

He could be profoundly difficult, but I loved him and will miss him terribly. Rest easy, Dad.
A sepia-toned photo from 1960 of a 13-year old boy with an alto saxophone. He's wearing a white, button-down shirt and tie and smiling.A black and white photo from 1966 of the 5th US Army Band playing in a grassy field. There are about four rows of about five musicians each playing different instruments, and the front row of saxophone players have solid black music stand fronts. The alto saxophone player in the middle of the front row has very shiny hair and he is my Dad.A polaroid from the 1980s shows a man with a mustache holding a swaddled newborn baby girl. She is very pink and looks like she is already verbally shitposting this world she was born into. A photo from the early 2000's of a young white woman with red hair holding a black Fender Stratocaster guitar with a clear pick guard. She is looking at the camera skeptically, while her Dad is sitting next to her with an alto saxophone in his hands and smiling at the camera. The mouthpiece is partially blocking his face because he's a pain in the ass in photos.

Happy 118th birthday, spacetime. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️ Hermann Minkowski addressed the 80th Assembly of German Natural Scientists and Physicians #OTD in 1908, offering a radical four-dimensional reformulation of Einstein's theory of special relativity. Here is how he opened his address.
"The views of space and time which I wish to lay before you have sprung from the soil of experimental physics, and therein lies their strength. They are radical. Henceforth space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality."

Oh. That's a heck of a subsidy.
At MIT, Harvard, or any other school, supervising an undergraduate researcher is a lot of work, costs a lot of money, involves a lot of meetings, and the results are not reliably excellent. Asking Claude is easier, faster, and may produce better results. It’s also cheaper, which is no accident: Harvard allows every Harvard student and faculty member to request a Claude token budget of $2,500 per month, even as research funding is continuously threatened and the University lays off staff.
