Discworld QOTD, from Unseen Academicals
A lot hinges on the fact that, in most circumstances, people are not allowed to hit you with a mallet. They put up all kinds of visible and invisible signs that say, 'Do not do this' in the hope that it'll work, but if it doesn't, then they shrug, because there is, really, no real mallet at all.

Ya’ll gonna let one of our favorite prompt sluts go hungry? I know my Skyline ain’t that cold. Let’s continue to pass around the same $10 as us poor folks do when we come together to feed each other. A share helps reach those with a few extra coin to give, so lets do this. Ready, set, go! Reskeet!

I loved Mariska Hargitay's documentary "My Mom, Jayne." In honor of Jayne Mansfield's legacy as a design icon, I present this image from a LIFE Magazine spread on her home, The Pink Palace, which answers the question "what if carpeted bathroom, but in a universe with more than 4 dimensions?"

Hey Bluesky, could you help me spread the word about my Etsy shop? A sale or two would be a colossal help. All of my creations are designed, hand-sewn, hand-embroidered by me. Each takes many hours to make. jeremycreature.etsy.com
Here's a lovely photo of a plethora of hand-sewn fabric art creatures. There's a watermelon creature with a red face, eight black seed-like eyes, and a wide mouth with five sharp teeth. There's a white ghost trinket bag covered with purple embroidered flowers. She has a gray face, sparkly black eyes and a little frown. There's a strawberry creature with three bulbous green eyes. There's a watermelon ghost, a strawberry ghost bag, and a black creature with sharp teeth. There's a white egg with yellow embroidered flowers and purple eyeshadow and purple lips. All the creatures are sitting on green fur and there's a galaxy print fabric in the background. The watermelon creature and the watermelon ghost are sitting on metal doll chairs.

The Ty Newydd Chambered tomb near Llanfaelog on #Anglesey. #Cadw states that although it's #Neolithic in date, it appears to have had continued use in the Bronze Age and that faint cup and rings marks have been found on the capstone. It was formerly covered by a cairn. #TombTuesday #YnysMon
Photos mine. The tomb can be seen in context at the far end of a field with the blue peaks of mountains in the distance.

Star Trek The Original Series scene. We're in an older earthlike building with nice wooden doors, bougie mouldings, and golden doorknobs, like a nice fancy house or courtroom type building. Standing up at attention is Spock and Bones, both in blue uniforms, hands held behind each of their backs. Closed caption reads, "There's always some punk trying to cut you out."

Discworld QOTD, from Equal Rites
Granny bit her lip. She was never quite certain about children, thinking of them - when she thought about them at all – as coming somewhere between animals and people. She understood babies. You put milk in one end and kept the other as clean as possible. Adults were even easier, because they did the feeding and cleaning themselves. But in between was a world of experience that she had never really inquired about. As far as she was aware, you just tried to stop them catching anything fatal and hoped that it would all turn out all right.

Discworld QOTD, from Pyramids
It will certainly show what our ancestors would be thinking if they were alive today. People have often speculated about this. Would they approve of modern society, they ask, would they marvel at present-day achievements? And of course this misses a fundamental point. What our ancestors would really be thinking, if they were alive today, is: "Why is it so dark in here?”

in addition to being the Glorious Twenty-Fifth of May, today is also Towel Day and so, in honor of Douglas Adams - the man who figured out the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything - here is why you should always carry a towel
A towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

Discworld QOTD, from Night Watch
That's a nice song," said young Sam, and Vimes remembered that he was hearing it for the first time.
"It's an old soldiers' song," he said.
"Really, sarge? But it's about angels."
Yes, thought Vimes, and it's amazing what bits those angels cause to rise up as the song progresses. It's a real soldiers' song: sentimental, with dirty bits.
"As I recall, they used to sing it after battles," he said. "I've seen old men cry when they sing it," he added.
"Why? It sounds cheerful."
They were remembering who they were not singing it with, thought Vimes. You'll learn. I know you will.

Discworld QOTD, from Maskerade
Old terror crouched in the shadows. It was one of the most ancient terrors, the one that meant that no sooner had mankind learned to walk on two legs than it dropped to its knees. It was the terror of impermanence, the knowledge that all this would pass away, that a beautiful voice or a wonderful figure was something whose arrival you couldn’t control and whose departure you couldn’t delay.

An autological word (or homological word)[1] expresses a property that it also possesses. For example, the word "word" is a word, the word "English" is (in) English, the word "writable" is writable, and the word "pentasyllabic" has five syllables.

The opposite, a heterological word, does not apply to itself. For example, the word "palindrome" is not a palindrome, "unwritable" is writable, and "monosyllabic" has more than one syllable.

And these are your reasons, my lord?"
"Do you think I have others?" said Lord Vetinari. "My motives, as ever, are entirely transparent."
