Each of us needs a zone of imaginative and exertive autonomy, a place where we can screw up without being scrutinized and judged - let alone captured and publicized.

While this is certainly a *kind* of surveillance, I think it's better to call it *scrutiny*. It's something worse than the sense of being watched: it's the sense of being *judged*. Inducing this feeling of being judged has long been a (sociopathic) desire of wealthy and powerful people.

"Choosin' Texas" is a perfectly fine country-pop song, and you may have already heard it, like when I spent much of 2023 and 2024 confidently asserting I had never heard Teddy Swims's "Lose Control" until I listened to it and realized it had soundtracked every visit I'd made to a CVS for months.

Today was the third day in a row I came within a yard of a car hitting me while I was walking in a crosswalk, and today was way too close. I realize we have some drivers out there, but I think we need to ban cars until we can figure out what's going on.

Gloria Steinem taught America that sexism is a symptom of a system that can be changed.

From the fight for equal pay to abortion access and political representation, she showed that progress comes when people organize, build power and refuse to accept inequality as inevitable.

She staged protests, established domestic violence shelters, created a magazine owned and operated entirely by women and helped build a movement that fundamentally changed this country.

Her legacy is the millions of people she inspired to believe that a more just world was possible.

She lived in New York for 70 years. We were lucky to have her. We mourn her loss and will carry her work forward.

Gloria Steinem fought for women to be heard, have a seat at the table, & equal rights. She proved showing up, speaking up, & not giving in matters The SAVE Act suppresses women’s voting access Gloria understood your Vote was your Voice #WomensHistoryMonth More on her ERA testimony in Alt Text
Picture of Gloria Steinem with
caption-

In 1970, a powerful senator asked Gloria Steinem why women needed equal rights.

“Because Senator, you wouldn't want our restrictions”

Her answer made him shift uncomfortably in his chair.

Context:

On May 6, 1970, Gloria Steinem testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the Equal Rights Amendment, challenging assumptions about gender equality

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA); this amendment, which has not been ratified, secures that one's rights "shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."

During the ERA Hearing Steinem demonstrated that laws and policies limiting women weren’t natural but human-made systems that could be changed. She pointed out that men, too, were constrained by gender roles, such as the expectation to be the breadwinner and avoid vulnerability.

Steinem's activism focused on treating individuals as equals, not making assumptions based on gender. She made the point that true equality benefits everyone, breaking down the systems that limit opportunities. The failure of the Equal Rights Amendment, three states short of ratification, showed how difficult it is to change unjust systems, even when fairness is the goal.

Her message remains relevant today. Resistance to equality often disguises itself as concern, but it’s rooted in protecting privileges that benefit some while limiting others. Equality should feel inevitable, not threatening. It’s not about rejecting change, but accepting that discomfort during transition is evidence of the need for progress.

The work Steinem + the women she collaborated with (Dolores Huerta, Dorothy Pitman Hughes, Wilma Mankiller, etc.) did was invaluable. It seems important to emphasize that collaboration cross-culturally was key to what they were able to accomplish. (It was imperfect, but that comes w/the territory)
