They are going to have to learn quickly, because the U.S. government no longer cares about the security of either Europe or Canada.

National soccer media needs to do a better job covering what’s going on in Austin. Entire fan section walks out mid match and it’s absolute crickets out-there. If you’re covering the match and focusing on Nashville’s win or Austin’s loss you are not doing your job.

A modern note; the Yellow Fever mosquito vector species is common here, and also transmits Dengue and Chikungunya. But we now have a yellow fever vaccine, and the other pathogens have not yet established a local foothold. I say "yet". Florida is dealing with its largest ever Dengue outbreak.

The campaign of educational censorship sweeping Texas and other GOP-governed states in the name of “free speech” and “diversity of viewpoint” in many ways exceeds the worst of the McCarthy Era (gift link obvs) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
You have to go back to the loyalty oath cases of the Cold War period to see relatively analogous situations where the government was trying to silence academics with viewpoints that they didn’t like,” Emerson Sykes, an attorney with the ACLU, told me. “But even in those cases, we did not see the sort of brazen attempt to ban particular ideas or ideologies and scrub them from the public record or from public education.”

This is what happens when you elevate “civil discourse” to be the greatest good. All of the sudden, it’s worse to call someone a Nazi than it is to be a Nazi.

There are many ways to destroy a university. Texas Tech, Texas A&M + the University of Texas have each taken a different approach…But the result will be the same: substandard education, substandard research + graduates who are less prepared for their future… + more prepared to obey without question.

So the US is at war with Iran. We are now funding Russia. And Russia is helping Iran. We are paying our opponent to shoot at us, then? This whole thing looks like a foreign policy Rube Goldberg device to enrich the U.S. fossil fuel oligarchs.

Nearby, other midges that did not look like spiders were being eaten by spiders. Phidippus audax, the bold jumper. Spiders generally avoid each other, so a potential prey item that manages to trick a spider could be safe.

I am in Cap Haitien interviewing people deported from the United States. I have been doing this kind of work for almost a decade and it literally does not get more dire than this. People have lost everything they built in the U.S. and are terrified and have no place to go or way to live.

One of the stranger coversations I had in Peace Corps was when a rich Paraguayo of Spanish descent helicoptered in to the remote nature preserve near my community (a mix of mestizo & indigenous groups, both dirt poor), and gave me a snide lecture about George Bush's colonialism.

Eventually, regime members like Guilfoyle who accept bribes but fail to deliver results will be one of the regime’s biggest liabilities. Spurned partners will complain and leak, and the crime machine breaks down. There is no honor among thieves.
