Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

It's not often you can pinpoint real, positive change a journalist has caused. But as Turkmeni sources state, @dpcarrington.bsky.social's persistent and probing coverage of this issue has been critical to a change of policy, with massive implications. Example: Should trans people be allowed to exist in society? Oh both sides disagree? Name the two sides. Well there's you, opposed to trans rights. Then there's me, in favor of them. And on we talk, very politely debating the trans issue. Never considering that trans people are a side, too.

It's pretty disgraceful that there has been absolutely no mention of this from the Prime Minister. It's increasingly clear that some attacks, correctly, warrant disgust, emergency measures and days of media coverage. Others seem to be met with silence.

That this cooperation is happening all around the West tells us there are underlying issues beyond electoral systems and political personalities that make this cooperation possible, in some ways inevitable. We need to understand these reasons a lot better in order to be able to fight the far-right.

This is good, but I think the model is more circular. Orbán's regime used techniques from single parties ruled US states and cities, then often sent its representatives to these states to hone their leaders' methods, gaining some influence in Washington via Florida for example.
