I left university in 2019 with £49,600 of debt. A few months later, I became an MP and have since received a salary that puts me in the top 5% in the country. 6 years on, the repayments from my salary have brought this total to down to £48,600 - just £1,000 less.

Read @alexpavesi.bsky.social's "Ink Ribbon Red". Really liked "Eight Detectives" when it came out, so I got this when it was released, but for some unaccountable reason took over a year to get around to it. As someone who reads a lot of this kind of thing, I found it as gripping (and clever) 1/2

Ink Ribbon Red, my second novel, is now out in paperback in the UK. Here are some of my favourite lines (quote cards made by my wonderful US publisher - the book is out in the US next month):
A quote from the novel Ink Ribbon Red by Alex Pavesi. “Phoebe had never seen bullets up close before; to her, they looked like fetal mushrooms, or primitive chess pieces.”A quote from the novel Ink Ribbon Red by Alex Pavesi. “After hanging up the phone, Marcin stamped on the accelerator. But he couldn't escape everyone else's bad driving, no matter how fast he went.”A quote from the novel Ink Ribbon Red by Alex Pavesi. ‘"Grief," said Anatol, with a surge of enthusiasm. "Grief is an awkward portmanteau of guilt, regret and disbelief.
Because those are its three main ingredients."’A quote from the novel Ink Ribbon Red by Alex Pavesi. “A heavy, late-morning mist lay on the landscape. Every blade of grass looked haunted.”

Again: Britain (not just this government but all of the recent ones) has a problem with knowledge work. Fishing, steel are manly proper jobs with a Victorian sense of place and history. Creative industries & HE are treated as secondary; derided or ignored.

it genuinely sucks that basically nothing on the internet works well anymore. search? barely works. social media? filled with garbage engagement-bait designed to game the algorithm. news websites? pages that refresh at random or so covered in video ads that it’s impossible to read stories

Maybe someone in publishing could invent the 'premium paperback' that would be released on the same day as the hardback, but (unlike the hardback) actually be comfortable to read and carry around.

New followers, hello! I published a book last week. Ink Ribbon Red. It's the story of a murder, told out of chronological order, in short fragmented chapters, which click into place like jigsaw pieces. Except some of the chapters aren't real – they're stories written by the characters!
