What an opening.
When They Insist Upon the Torment Nexus

or: your car should not drive you to jail

MARGARET KILLJOY

JUL 29, 2026

A few weeks ago, a self-driving Waymo-brand taxi in San Mateo, California delivered two children into the hands of the police. The machine determined that its two 15-year-old passengers were drinking and shooting toy guns, so it contacted the police, drove itself to a parking lot, and turned itself off. The children were then apprehended by the armed men (and possibly women), who graciously decided that instead of caging the teenagers, they could be returned to their parents. This time.

Nearly every article I've read on the matter really wants to emphasize the fact that the children were not locked into the car, that they were free to leave. That the two fifteen years olds were free to leave from a random parking lot, god knows how far from home. As if that makes it alright.

And I read a lot of articles about the incident, because at least a dozen people tagged me in the stories or messaged me about it. Because in 2015, Vice published a short story of mine called One Star, about a nonbinary graffiti artist trapped in a self-driving taxi that decides to drive them to jail. It's a short read, scarcely longer than my average newsletter.

The Parkwood Murders, my second novel, is out in hardback today. Buy it below! www.waterstones.com/book/the-parkwo…
The Parkwood Murders by Chris Chibnall. Parkwood Holiday Village seems like the perfect retreat,
offering guests peaceful woodland walks and a relaxing escape from everyday life. But the discovery
of a body in the swimming pool shatters the tranquillity and leaves Detective Nicola Bridge facing a
complex investigation. With a resort full of guests and staff, everyone appears to have something to
hide. As the suspect list grows, so does the tension, leading to a series of revelations that will keep
readers hooked. Atmospheric and packed with intriguing characters, it is classic crime fiction at its
best. Chris Chibnall, creator and writer of Broadchurch, brings his storytelling talents to the page with
this compelling mystery. A superb holiday read that proves even the most picturesque locations can
hide deadly secrets. Published by HQ. July 16th 2026. £9.99 Paperback. Pre-order here
