I am very excited that the Cambridge Companion to the Western Front - edited by Nick Lloyd - will be published in July. My contribution covers morale and the experience of the trenches. It was a (rewarding) challenge to try and synthesise such a complex topic across multiple armies.

Yesterday I took a group of our first year UG HY120 students to the UK’s National Archives for their final optional archive trip of the year. At the TNA, we had an interactive workshop led by several of the TNA’s records specialists - including Dr. William Butler and Dr. Elizabeth Haines.

We drew on the collection of @historians.org essays analysing the film by Santanu Das, Susan Grayzel, @thehistorygirl1.bsky.social, and Catherine Robson. Students were drawn to the soundscape and narrative but queried the silences and omissions. All agreed it was an impressive piece of cinema!

This is incredibly sad. I met Tim for the first and only time over the summer whilst doing research at the Canadian War Museum. For someone so senior (and busy) he was incredibly generous with his time: took me for a coffee, discussed his research, and enquired about mine. A real loss.

I had a wonderful time in the archive room of the Canadian Great War Centre in Montreal yesterday. Most of my time was spent looking through their postcard collection. However, I also saw their (no longer) radioactive wrist watch collection and a painting of Arthur Currie by John Singer Sargent.

I was not particularly happy with my MA module this year. So I ripped it up and started again. The course attempts to be transnational and to balance different approaches to the FWW. Would you add or remove anything? I have a reading list, but is there any new scholarship you would recommend?
