Other chapters cover important themes including war planning, technology and tactics, colonial experiences, command, occupation, poetry, and memory. Having had the opportunity to read the proofs, I am confident that I will be using many of these brilliant essays in my teaching next year.

I am very excited that the Cambridge Companion to the Western Front - edited by Nick Lloyd - will be published in July. My contribution covers morale and the experience of the trenches. It was a (rewarding) challenge to try and synthesise such a complex topic across multiple armies.

Officers in particular brought a huge amount of cultural baggage to Mesopotamia (and elsewhere): their reading of the classics, portrayals of the Orient in literature, and their imperial identities. Working class soldiers interpreted the world differently. What article have you just read?

Thanks for the question, Paul! Primarily using a mixture of ego-documents (so: letters, diaries, but also postcards, soldiers' guidebooks, memoirs, notebooks) and cross referencing this with institutional documents (unit diaries, for instance). There was certainly some with internal colonialism.

That is a shame. It’s never a very high % of the overall grade but I think it is good for students to know that choices have consequences across the academic year. Equally, we are being steered back towards in person assessment and this is one way to ensure this doesn’t simply mean in person exams.

Whilst I don’t like it, it has been a class participation mark - there is a consequence for non-completion of work. This combined with specific questions or tasks that require a close engagement with the readings. I am also introducing a (very small) penalty for failing to submit formative work.
