I wish media could muster up the will to fact check this - because Alito and his cronies have basically killed the Establishment clause.

Contra Alito, religious liberty and accommodation have in fact expanded in the years since Obergefell. Examples abound: e.g. the Covid church cases and the way "most favored nation" handling of religion has been displacing Employment Division v. Smith regarding laws of general application.

Alito calls same-sex marriage a 'decisive' turn 'against religious liberty' in new book
A new book by Justice Samuel Alito presents his view of the Constitution, the Supreme Court, and the country with a focus on religious freedom.

Voters including military families knew this in 2024, that he was like this. Doesn't make it any less vile. But I remain appalled that this guy - who don't forget insulted Captain Khan in 2016, got more votes than ever before. Something is deeply wrong with us.

He said this at the time, as did many, and it remains a bald-faced lie. Not a matter of opinion. It's just completely untrue as an objective factual matter. Civil marriage laws don't work like that and never have. Just like the legality of divorce and remarriage doesn't affect the Catholic Church.

It is very much Not Fine. But those who insisted in 2024 that queers needed to campaign against Democrats, which would cause queer lives to be endangered in the US, was wrong, especially since Trump winning would also hurt people in Gaza. Even Gazans told us this.

stumbled across this, and its amazing to see people say what I've said about "Queers for Palestine" demanding that LGBT people give up on their rights where they live to spend all their time fighting for people who don't support them in other countries and they're like "yeah that right!"
“Palestine isn’t just another cause for queer movements—it’s a litmus test,” says Alexander Stoffel, a queer historian and author of Eros and Empire. “It reveals two competing visions of queerness. One is white, Western and assimilationist, seeking validation from the very powers that once criminalized it.” The other, he argues, is liberationist and intersectional, grounded in solidarity and “the belief that freedom must include the right of all people to shape their own lives.”

It's funny, too, because the punk ethos always runs up against reality that if you rage at incremental changes, nothing will ever get better. It's ultimately a teenage mentality, like libertarianism and anarchism.

Both sidsing it ensures that Republicans get the chance to eliminate USAID and kill milllions; Hegseth gets to murder fishermen; ICE gets to murder citizens and immigrants and whoever they feel like. A protest concert saves zero lives, that's the uncool truth.

He has a megaphone to push "both sides bad", while remaining unaffected by the hellscape this belief helps create. Which is true of many of the men at Power to the People concert. To remain cool as all hell, all they have to do is a hold a concert and say "Harris was grody!" and people cheer.

He was a “both sides are bad” guy and you can look at how many did not vote and draw your own conclusions about whether he is as cool as he thinks he is. I like a lot of the music he has done, and the musicians inspired by it, but…he sits in a whole lot of privilege.

Longwell, like Rick Wilson, was happy to play footsie with the white nationalist nut jobs. They believed they could use them and then constrain them when necessary. I know if either of them has ever admitted that they made space for fascists that are now running the country.

Great review, fair. There are some lessons there we have to take to heart even if they suck. But your broader point is that focus groups have limits, and voters have demonstrably dark beliefs. It's hard for Longwell to go there, because that's an indictment of the GOP she worked with for so long.

This weekend, I went to Springfield, Ohio, for Pierre Damas Bel's funeral--and to next-door Vandalia for Trump's same-day rally, where the president took a victory lap on the policies that killed him. I hope you'll give it a read. www.thebulwark.com/p/a-death-a-...

On the day Springfield held a funeral for Pierre Damas Bel, the president held a rally 25 miles away. We went to both.

Truly incredible that this is how the media is choosing to eulogize the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the House in US history, who was a serial sexual abuser of children. For all the talk about "deep state" plots to abuse children, no one even remembers this case.
From CBS News: "Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who represented Illinois for two decades in Congress and was later jailed for violating banking laws, has died."

I remember the radio being filled with ads by Bush attacking gay marriage, non-stop. This was at the height of the Iraq War, but his closing message was "I will stop gays". And that is one of many reasons I refuse to participate in his image rehabilitation.

Can't. But that's also because the team's owner (brother of ex-gov of TN) funded JD Vance and is now funding Vivek. And he's taking the team to a dome in the suburbs, which will destroy downtown businesses. So there are multiple reasons they dont' deserve support.

False. Biden's student loan reforms got struck down by SCOTUS, for example. What we have are two sets of rules -- one for Republicans, one for Democrats. And that requires structural reform.

the worst thing you can do is to base your values on what you think the public wants, the second-worst thing you can do is convince yourself that the public really shares your values and is being betrayed. People are simply not consistent enough or knowledgeable enough en masse to say this.

Voters - despite 20 years of experience - consistently say Rs are better on the economy. The media's narrative has to be a big part of that, right? As soon as a Dem president is sworn in, the media goes straight into Bad Economy Watch.
