So with the news of the layoffs at KO_OP, I'm officially looking for work later this fall. I'm an experienced narrative designer that's worked on both sprawling open world stories and intimate cinematic narratives, even netting some award wins and noms. More details on my experience below!

As a new Harry Potter trailer makes the rounds, it bears repeating that there’s no way to watch this show without supporting J.K. Rowling’s bigotry and the structural violence she’s inflicting on the trans community.

There is no ethical consumption of HBO’s Harry Potter series
You can’t without supporting Rowling’s transphobic bigotry.

Oh no... I didn't realize the GDC submission cut off at noon today!! I've been polishing my presentation outline and didn't fully submit before the page locked down. Does anyone know if there's a way to contact the team? I've got everything in docs, they just didn't make it into the fields.

👇 In reference to that SDCC Avatar Aang slide everyone is talking about. It was a page from an artbook, and the reference to Chat GPT was likely injected by the person who put the book together. Actual artists like Kat who worked on the film have no idea why it says that.

"If you chew it multiple times, you begin to taste the plastic. The fancy packaging can’t hide the empty calories." This exactly described my experiences dealing with workslop in the workplace. The moment you read with the intention to learn /anything/, GenAI writing falls apart.

A fave quote from this one: "AI writing is designed to never be read again. It’s fast-food writing. Order it, skim it, toss it into the garbage can. It feels nice on first chew. It feels correct on a skim. But if you read it twice, you’d wonder if it had any real meaning at all." (1/2)

Why A.I. Isn’t Going to Make Art
To create a novel or a painting, an artist makes choices that are fundamentally alien to artificial intelligence.

I wanted to follow-up on this with several thoughtful articles and video essays I encountered in my search. These all felt encouraging to me in that they helped me feel *sane* in a landscape often dominated by hype marketing.

Doing a bit of research on what AI writing lacks (reasoning, meaning). I distinctly remember reading a great thread from an editor on this subject, and the impact it has on their work. Does anyone remember that or know where I could find it? My search is coming up empty.

If you're thinking about using gen-AI to "write" books, this 🧵 is for you. I’m a highly experienced editor who’s been in the biz a long time. Recently I’ve had manuscripts come to me where the author has used gen-AI – not for writing, I’ve been assured, but for “structuring” or "organising"

when we mourn le guin, we mourn one of our greatest writers & thinkers. but we also mourn one of our all-time greatest haters
All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don't be too scary, and be sure there's a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on.

If you do all that, you might even write Jonathan Livingston Seagull and make twenty billion dollars and have every adult in America reading your book.

But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.

It’s so important to engage with other art forms as a game dev. This is a medium heavily influenced by ones older than it, for better and for worse. A lot of your favorite horror games have roots in amazing movies. And read! Please read! There are folks who think that this isn’t relevant. It is!
