Also, is Georgia really a "red state" when Andre Dickens' predecessor is about to be dragged across the finish line and become the first Black woman governor in American history?
A group of 15 Democratic mayors governing in Republican-dominated states are building a new political operation that aims to influence national politics as a center-left alternative to both the MAGA movement and what they describe as "far-left dysfunction" from groups like the Democratic Socialists of America.

The organization -- Blue Cities/Red States -- is led by Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb and will launch next week in Miami with a kickoff event hosted by its mayor, Eileen Higgins. The founding mayors lead cities including Atlanta, Jacksonville, Boise, Tulsa and Memphis -- governing more than 7 million Americans across 11 red and purple states, according to a memo for the new coalition.

What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.

This is just sad man
“What are they saying?” I asked.

Noor read the notes: “Radical Foreign Pro-Hamas Student. Terrorist sympathizer. National and foreign policy security threat.”

“This is not me,” I said. “Did they show any evidence?”

She paused. “No. Nothing.”

Of course not. There was no evidence because there was nothing to show.

The irony is stunning. I have little patience for Palestinian factions: not Hamas, not the Palestinian Authority, none of them. I have always criticised their failures, their corruption, their inability to unite the Palestinian people behind a liberatory national movement. I have been frustrated by their ideological rigidity, their factionalism, their willingness to sacrifice the national cause for organisational survival and personal gain.

For Palestinians, evidence has never been the point. We are the exception to every rule the ‘free world’ claims to hold sacred. Innocent until proven guilty – unless you are Palestinian. Due process – unless you are Palestinian. Free speech and academic freedom – unless you are Palestinian. The principles dissolve the moment a Palestinian enters the frame.

It did not matter that I had never endorsed Hamas. It did not matter that I argued for a democratic vision of Palestinian liberation where everyone enjoys peace, dignity, justice, and prosperity. It did not matter that my politics were, by any honest measure, focused on equality, accountability, international law, and human rights. None of it mattered. The moment they decided I was dangerous, I became dangerous. The moment they called me a terrorist, I was one.

Update

Please be advised that no network travel pool is expected to be with U.S. President Donald Trump today as he heads to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. CNN was the designated network to cover the president's travel today, but the network has been barred by the White House.

On Saturday, reporters from three major news organizations — CNN, MS NOW and Politico — were denied access to the White House, a day after President Trump said he was barring them due to what he called unfavourable coverage he found to be “fake news.”

The Associated Press will cover the president at the United Nations, with journalists on the ground providing coverage, including live video, images and reporting

We will keep customers updated with developments as we learn them. Please contact editorialsupport@ap.org with any further questions.

"[Democratic candidates who succeed in the coming years] do it with urgency — not because they want to be like Trump but because they understand that these times demand wartime generals, not peacetime diplomats."
There’s a distinction here. Democrats don’t want Trump’s politics or even necessarily his all-out norm breaking. But they want his energy. They’re sick of a Democratic Party that does the functional equivalent of sending a strongly worded letter while democracy burns down around us. That tension—absolutely not, but also yes—is the defining mood among Democratic voters right now. They don’t want to become what they hate. But they are tired of losing to it.

I don’t think that most Democratic elites understand this reality. In those circles, the dominant debate seems to be about whether the party should be more progressive or more moderate. The future of the party is seen as a policy question. But when I listen to Democratic voters, they’re not asking for ideological recalibration or even policy specifics. They trust that if the right person makes it into office, the policy questions will take care of themselves. Instead, the Democratic voters I’m listening to are almost universally asking a different question: Why aren’t you fighting harder?

Amy Wax is filing this lawsuit because she was suspended for one year at half pay for saying "Ashkenazi Jews are 'diluting [their] brand like crazy because [they are] intermarrying,'" among other things:
In 2021, Wax wrote that "As long as most Asians support Democrats and help to advance their positions, I think the United States is better off with fewer Asians and less Asian immigration." She claimed that Asians are ungrateful for the advantages of living in the US and vote disproportionately for the "pernicious" Democratic Party, which she called "mystifying" because the Democratic Party "demands equal outcomes despite clear . . . group differences" and "valorizes blacks." She cited Enoch Powell while calling for stricter race-based immigration restrictions against Asians.[43][44]

During a January 2022 interview with Gad Saad, Wax stated that among her past students "there were some very smart Jews", but "Ashkenazi Jews are 'diluting [their] brand like crazy because [they are] intermarrying.'"[45][46]

In April 2022, Wax said on Tucker Carlson Today that "blacks" and other "non-Western" groups harbor "resentment, shame, and envy" against Western people for their "outsized achievements and contributions." Wax then attacked Indian immigrants for criticizing things in the United States when "their country is a shithole" and went on to say that "the role of envy and shame in the way that the Third-World regards the First-World [...] creates ingratitude of the most monstrous kind."[47]

Wax's syllabus for her seminar "Conservative Political and Legal Thought" that was released in August 2022 included a scheduled speech by white supremacist Jared Taylor, the editor of the white supremacist magazine American Renaissance.[46]

Messina Touring Group, promoter of the U.S. leg of Sheeran’s Loop Tour, said in a statement to Rolling Stone: “As the concert promoter for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour, we have been notified by venues on the upcoming U.S. tour dates that they will not allow a concert to take place with Macklemore on the lineup, which would result in the cancellation of the tour and impact hundreds of thousands of fans. After discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore will not be performing on the remaining support dates.”

iPad
Line of tablet computers by Apple

The iPad is a brand of tablet computers developed and marketed by Apple that run the company's mobile operating systems iOS (older models) and iPadOS. The first-generation iPad was introduced on January 27, 2010. Since then, the iPad product line has been expanded to include the smaller iPad Mini, the lighter and thinner iPad Air, and the flagship iPad Pro models. As of 2022, over 670 million iPads have been sold, making Apple the largest vendor of tablet computers. Due to its popularity, the term "iPad" is sometimes used as a generic name for tablet computers.

INBOX: with the departure of Drew Kann from the Atlanta Journal constitution, by my count, there are no longer any full-time print or digital climate reporters dedicated to serving Atlanta, the 7th-largest US media market, with control of the Georgia Public Service Commission on the line this fall.
Drew Kann

Award-winning digital storyteller, reporter and editor covering the effects of climate change and the energy transition.

7h Edited

I suppose it's time to share some news about me:

Today is my last day at the Atlanta

Journal-Constitution and, for now at least, my last as a working journalist.

I'm not going to lie. It was a really tough decision to leave my role and this business, but I'm really excited about the opportunity I have in front of me come on that soon. more to

I spent a lot of time this week reflecting on what I've enjoyed most over the last ~5 years covering climate, environment and energy in Georgia, my home state. Without a doubt, it's 1) the places I got to experience here 2) the people I got to meet that I will miss the most.

I've spent most of my life in Georgia, but the opportunity to cover environmental issues here opened my eyes to just how rich it is in natural beauty. I'd encourage you to hit the road and experience the Peach State's wild places for yourself.

To my soon-to-be former colleagues: These are difficult times, but the journalism you produce is vital to the health of our city, state and country. Don't ever forget that and I'll be cheering you on from afar.

Some German Jews at the other end of the spectrum, however, go so far as to back the party. “You don’t have openly anti-Zionist people in the AfD,” says Artur Abramovych of Berlin, who chairs the Jews in the AfD association, a group with about 25 members. For him, that’s reason enough to support the party.

He also expects a new AfD government to “cut off all the state money for far-left universities and colleges” and state broadcasters that he feels have an anti-Israel agenda. He dismisses what he calls the historical revisionism of some AfD leaders as irrelevant in a state with no prominent Holocaust memorials. His only beef with the party is their support for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Abramovych himself is a migrant from Ukraine.

Jesus Christ: after a recent ruling by the Eighth Circuit that allowed Act 372 to take effect, an Arkansas county has banned all children from checking out any books in the adult section, bringing home any DVDs, or using the self-checkout kiosk in its public libraries.
More recently in Craighead County — symbolically, at least, Ground Zero for the state’s attack on libraries, thanks to Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Jonesboro) — the library announced several changes to circulation as it relates to minors. In a Facebook post, the library listed a number of changes to library policies, including:

Minors are prohibited from using the self-checkout kiosks;
Children under 13 years old may only check out materials from the designated children’s collection, while minors age 13-17 can only check out from the children or teen sections;
Minors may not check out DVDs at all; and
Minors are prohibited from entering or purchasing anything from the Friends of the Library Bookstore.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

FOM MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE COMMISSIONER DR. JON STEINBRECHER

Upon the conclusion of the Western Michigan-Michigan football game, the Mid-American Conference and Western Michigan contacted the Big Ten office to seek clarification regarding the replay review and the placement of time back on the game clock.

The Big Ten explained that the ball touched a player who was out of bounds before the clock reached 00:00, resulting in one additional play being awarded. The Big Ten subsequently provided video and audio of the replay, which confirmed the explanation provided to us.

I commend Western Michigan for an outstanding effort and a well-played game, and I offer my congratulations to Michigan.

I also appreciate the collaborative efforts of the Big Ten office and its prompt response in reviewing the play and providing the requested clarification.

why???
Carey said he has interviewed multiple players and has learned Mayich showed obvious signs of distress during the workout and was unable to complete tasks as it progressed.

"He was disoriented and struggled well before he collapsed," he said.
Players were forced to go through a series of intensive workouts without standard breaks while the ex-soldier "yelled at them from the get-go ... like a drill instructor," Carey said. They were told not to complain, and water was available only to those in the lead of exercises, leaving little for those who trailed, he said.

Carey has accused ASU of mishandling the investigation into Mayich's collapse. Coaches and team staff have continued overseeing players, who fear retaliation such as the loss of scholarships or positions if they speak out, he said.

No effort has been made to sequester the hockey players from the coaching staff who oversaw the workout, he said.

oh this reporting from The Arizona Republic's Robert Anglen is damning: "A number of provisions could have protected the Canadian native before the 50-minute workout, during the exercises and after he fell to the ground near the end — if they had been followed." www.azcentral.com/story/sports...
A number of provisions could have protected the Canadian native before the 50-minute workout, during the exercises and after he fell to the ground near the end — if they had been followed.

Mayich was not immediately rushed to a cooling station or dunked in an ice bath when he fell down at the ASU track; he was instead left on the ground for several minutes, Carey said.

"They didn't have any cooling plan in place," he said.

School guidelines say the first choice for treating heat illness "is with immediate cold water immersion," even if an athlete is fully clothed. They say "a cold tub half-filled with water" should be ready for immediate use. Three to four coolers of ice should be next to the tub to use in case of emergency.

Photo of a handwritten letter:
When I was 17 I had a fantastic idea that I might meet the love of my life on a date in a chicken shop.

I've spent my entire twenties sitting across from the most incredible people, people I'd always dreamt of meeting. All of them charmed me (some more than others) and I definitely charmed them.

To me the show is my very own romcom and I have loved creating so many stories for you to watch. I am so grateful to everyone who has followed me on this journey and found some joy in these episodes.

I never thought I'd stop Chicken Shop Date, I thought maybe it would be a part of me forever, and in some way it always will, but I feel like it's now time to move on from this adventure and onto a new one.

But before I say goodbye forever, I want to celebrate everything Chicken Shop Date has been for me with a few final dates...coming very soon.

That is why we’ve launched a new, comprehensive AI academic portfolio designed to prepare students to lead in a changing world. This is why we introduced higher-education’s first academic Center for the Creator Economy, positioning Syracuse at the forefront of a $500 billion industry.

As I’ve made clear before, because we are financially and structurally strong, our annual 1.5% operating deficit is far from a crisis. It is, however, a signal that we must commit to differentiated academic excellence and to our shared responsibility to the students we serve. Part of that commitment means knowing how we are going to operate moving forward, and that means remaining true to who we are and what makes our institution distinct, unique and worth it. Demand for a Syracuse education has never been our problem. However, what is clear is that we cannot take for granted that prospective students and families inherently understand the enduring and lifelong value of a Syracuse University degree.

We see that value affirmed every day by our alumni. They are presidents, governors, astronauts, renowned journalists, award-winning entertainers, accomplished doctors and judges, hall-of-fame athletes and so much more. They know what a Syracuse degree is worth and live it every day. Their commitment to this university is proof of its lasting value. They return to campus to mentor students and open their eyes to career paths they never knew existed. They connect students with internships and jobs and create experiential learning opportunities that position them to be successful in the workplace from day one. They share hard-won experience and wisdom with the next generation of Orange.

I had never seen a chart where those concerned and dismissive about climate change are equally opposed to the same thing -- until @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social started polling respondents about AI data centers. (And this survey was conducted in the spring)
A majority of Americans (56%) “strongly” or “somewhat” oppose building a data center in their local area, while only 15% “strongly” or “somewhat” support building one. Opposition varies across Global Warming's Six Americas, ranging from 71% among the Alarmed to 32% among the Disengaged. Majorities of the Concerned (58%) and the Dismissive (57%) are opposed, while about half or less of the Doubtful (49%) and the Cautious (45%) oppose building a data center in their local area.
