Internet vigilantes are famous for getting things right. We had two discussions of how Reddit users got the identity of the Boston bomber wrong twice on Bluesky in September already. I do think this internet rage could've been avoided had Cornell taken swift disciplinary action on Winston Lee.

I did read the piece. and there are flaws in the methodology (eg. curly vs straight quotes). And that's why I think it's imperative that Erin issues a statement on the numerous factual inaccuracies that other journalists (not just OP) have observed, and how to reduce them moving forward

When we cover delicate and litigious topics, we have to get it right on the first try. The stakes are really high! No matter how big or small your media outlet is, we can all do better by carefully fact-checking and proactively issuing corrections when we do inevitably get something wrong

I push back against the comparison of quotation marks, because Otter and Ghost do use straight quotes by default (and we turned off everything Generative AI-related) However it appears to me that even if Erin did not use GenAI in her writing, EITM had notable lapses in its fact-checking protocol.
