You know who was round on Claw Island the other day givin' me grief? Only bleedin' BATMAN! I says "You can't go round punching folk like me with bad hips vigilante-like. I've got rights!" & HE says "the right to be punched in the face" & I say "that's RUBBISH mate. You was better in the ol' days"...

The ghosts in PacMan are conscious. They can distinguish between when PacMan has eaten one of those large dots and when he hasn't, knowing when to chase and when to retreat, aware of the suffering should he catch them at the wrong time. I have no more patience for hedging on this matter.

AI is mass decompiling games. That's both awesome and scary.
AI is now able to decompile games and software in a matter of days. That's scary... but kind of exciting.

Re the Sally Rooney news, I was looking up data on arrests under terrorism legislation the other day, and hadn't quite realised how utterly bonkers the effect of the Palestine Action prohibition had been. That big purple spike is basically all PA-related arrests.

I find this part hilarious. They even pressured Random House to stop reprinting a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles book that explained cattle methane and encouraged eating less meat. By coincidence, I randomly found this book for my kids a year or so ago in a thrift shop:

The plotting in the latter half perhaps gets a little linear/neat, but impossible not to root for the two lead characters, and the performances are super. Really nice stuff.

Just spotted 'Bob Trevino Likes It' currently streaming on Channel 4, watched it straight off. Vaguely remembered (from intending but failing to see it previously) it was my kind of thing (understated dramedy, about found family) but cried A MASSIVE AMOUNT (good thing). Strong recommend.

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

For the curious about correct usage: "12 eggs comprise a dozen." "A dozen eggs is composed of 12 eggs." "Comprised of" is inherently incorrect but that's how it's used, almost exclusively, and "composed," the correct word to use with "of," has disappeared from the conversation. It's just strange!
